does anyone know any ? is it even possible to use a smaller one ?
I just don't like carrying the brick around. it uses up a lot of space.

    Hey,

If your signature is correct and you have the 6970m then you have to have the 180W brick as the GPU requires that much power :(

The one thing that modern technology hasn't been able to miniaturize like we have been able to do with everything from transistor to battery technology is power supplies. High wattage supplies will always be quite large and necessitate large power regulation components. There's nothing that can be done unless someone were to come up with a more usable form factor (maybe longer and flatter with the same internal volume).

May I ask why do you want a 180W PSU?

To be honest I think they can make a smaller adapter that can meet the power requirements just fine. I love kensington laptop adapters however they aren't built for 180W :(

I always preferred this adapter to the standard's
120 Watt Notebook DC Power Adapter - K33196 - Kensington it delivers 120W and is about the size of 1 1/2 iPhone 4

We don't actually know the real dimensions of this yet. As I pointed out in another thread, the spec sheet only lists the size of the retail package which is 7.25" x 2.50 x 10.25". How big is it really? Kensington didn't start shipping it until the end of April/early May! It's not in any retail channels yet.

While it's possible, the market for aftermarket adapters larger than 120w is very small. Only very high end, high performance machines have a use for them- a market that most companies probably don't see the benefit of going in to. 120w is pretty uncommon on its own.

I just realized I have the Kensington 120W at home!, I just don't have an 8130 to test it so I have no idea if I even have the proper adapter tip for the Clevo.

It has been my most favorite power adapter ever, its the size of an iPhone 4!!!!!

Where did you get it? I haven't seen it for sale anywhere, even online. It won't work for the 8150 however, unless you have the 560M only.

For some reason I don't trust something that small. It either has much higher power efficiency or it has reduced safety features and less power regulation (large quality Japanese capacitors would not fit in the Kensington). A professional PSU tester would need to compare the two.

Don't cry later if the 120W aftermarket power adapter fails to adequately power any 8150 equipped with more than the 560m.

Lol its so small its almost worth trying. I loved this adapter when I had a working laptop, never turned back. It didn't even get all that hot either.

I never did understand the aversion to large power adapters, it's part and parcel of getting the laptop and the engineers know more than the general public when it comes to selecting the right size and power output for the specific model, if it's so large and unsightly why bother choosing that laptop model in the 1st place?

We look forward to hearing the results of the field test, like I mentioned earlier if there's any problem you'd have brought it on yourself for using a mismatched power adapter to specific electronics.

I think when it was in the stores it didn't do too well because the price was so high 149$ when compared to the next universal laptop adapter which might've been 20-30$.

I believe this page may be more accurate.

    http://us.kensington.com/html/13874.html SUggested Retail: 149$

    Specifications

    Unit measures 5.6"L x 3.1" W x 0.77" H (14.22 cm L x 7.87 cm W x 1.96 cm H)
    Weighs 8 oz (250 g) (Body Only); 16 oz (500 g) (Body and Cables)

You need 19V DC and 6.3A so that adapter may just be on the edge of working or making things go boom!

I am using this model for mobility
    AcBel Polytech Inc.????:
and yes it start making funny noises when I put the GPU under load (never happens for CPU only loads)! BTW I think it has some safety:
OVP: OVP trip and latch at 29V max.
SCP: It shall not result in a fire hazard, shock hazard, or damage to the power unit
OTP: No damage and shut down
OCP: 7.4A max for 19Vdc and 4A max for 5Vdc, Hiccup mode
what would OCP etc be, overcurrent protection??

Yes OCP is overcurrent protection but I would seriously not use that adapter for any extended length of time. It is a 95W adapter.

That 120W kensington would be enough for an 8130 w/560m right?
    That's a great find.

Not enough amps compared to the stock PSU and I wouldn't risk it but you could try. The stock PSU might provide higher specs than the 8130 actually requires.

Everyone who says you have to use a bigger power adapter, and that there has been no technological advancement in this area is wrong.

In fact, there has been a huge amount of technological advancement. I'm not particularly well read on this, but even the highest end cards such as the 6970m are now designed to idle at very low wattage, like 10w.

All you have to do is not game (duh) or stress anything too much. Get a kill-a-watt meter, start doing some measurements. Then you can probably get it down to 90w and lock all of the clocks and voltages.

If you do this its completely 100% safe to use a 90w adapter.

That's on the transistor side, not on the power supply, power regulation side. Of course if you prevent your hardware from going to a higher P-State, a weaker powersupply would work. Even the built in stock battery that comes with the unit cannot supply enough power to operate at full speed.
