I have been keeping an eye on things for about a month now and am looking to buy later this month. But what I am looking at scares me. For one, it looks like the early-order promotions are over (that's fine, just want to get it out there). The thing that scares me is it looks like we are losing some options.

www.discountlaptops.com only has the Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT with 512MB DDR3 Video Memory. No more 7950?

www.xoticpc.com has both the 8700 and the 7950 available, but the 7950 costs $100 more than the 8700, which comes "standard."

www.pugetsystems.com is insanely priced. Base is around $2,700 with all the lowest specs. Never really did much comparison with them anyways, but wanted to throw that out there.

www.pctorque.com seems to be about $300 - $350 more expensive than discountlaptops and xoticpc for the base system - before you even customize it to be identical to the early-order specials.

It also looks like discountlaptops and xoticpc are no longer offering the 2GB of ram as 1 SODIMM. Now if you get 2GB it comes at 2 SODIMM's no matter what.

Would love to hear from the guys at xoticpc and discountlaptops. pugetsystems and pctorque are so overpriced i am not even considering going back to their sites! :)

I have no idea about the other stuff, but as far as that ^, it's because the Go 7950 GTX is the more powerful card, thus the slight price premium.

To ensure both quality and performance Sager has decided to no longer make 1x2GB or 3GB options. (because of the loss of performance by not running Dual Channel Ram)

As Joga states, the 7950GTX is more expensive then the 8700 because it is more powerful. The Special package that was running was a pre-order special that was temporary.

I also wanted to throw out that Powernotebooks have quietly began to include the 8700m GT in their Sager NP5790 configurations as well. :)

Lots of choices and options for that Sager, the Toshiba no longer holds the 8700m GT monopoly. :D

Luckily I ordered mine with the 7950GTX + a glossy WSXGA screen + 3GB of RAM from XoticPC last week... :D Wait... so running 3GB of RAM would bring a loss of performance? Didn't know that... How much of a performance loss are we talking about here... I hope getting 3GB of RAM will still have better performance than getting 2x1GB of RAM...

i hear that its better to have 2x 1gb instead of one 2gb memory....what about 2x2gb , will it take advantage of the dual sticks?

Dual Channel isn't really a big deal nowadays, most benchmarks point to at most a 2-5% increase in performance, which isn't really noticeable in normal tasks.

yeah... seriously - why would sager cut those ram configurations for terms of performance when it hardly makes a difference anyway? 1x2gb stick is much better for upgrading anyway - I would look at performance in that respect, rather than just at the initial purchase...

Nothing's stopping you from buying your own RAM, but I do agree that it's a bummer you can't just get the RAM from the reseller themselves to cut the hassle of warranties and different prices, etc. :(

I just mean for the option of maxing out the 4gb limit, ideally you want 2x2gb ram sticks... now you are forced to either buy that initially or start with the 1gb and have that left over once you upgrade... but indeed - a bummer

Yeah, that is indeed a bummer. I also noticed that an upgrade to 4GB of RAM is now $250 whereas before it was only $170. But hey, it's still pretty cheap, considering that Alien-rip-off charges $1000 bucks for the same.

i think the difference there is that now the systems come setup with 1GB instead of 2GB. so with the pre-order special you were getting 2GB and now you are only getting 1GB by default, so to add that initial 1GB to get you back up to the starting 2GB of the pre-order it is going to cost you that extra $80. I noticed this with the processors also, the cost was $95 to go to 2.2Ghz, but now it is higher - but that is because it starts at the 1.8Ghz processors instead of the 2.0Ghz.

No 1680x1050 Glossy. Is that temporary or foreseeably permanent?

XoticPC.com and Powernotebooks.com have the best price that I've come across. Anyone who can beat their price for the same components is blowing ya smokes or FOS, IMHO. Puget, who's another Sager reseller, is way overpriced! Have confidence and go with Justin or Donald. Their stellar reputation on this forum cannot be faked or bought.

(Hehe, that's at least a free shipping discount, ain't it Justin?) LOL

    I couldn't agree more.

The integrity of Powernotebook's Donald and XoticPC's Justin is a rare find in this business. Without it, I wouldn't even consider the Sager line. I'd be stuck lamenting the purchase of two overpriced, underspec'd, understated 17" Dell Inspirons.

Now I'm merely bidding my time to see if and when Nvidia comes out with the 8800m. But I'm sold on Sager. And on from whom to buy it from.
