Today I've been noticing some very strange sound/volume issues with my Sager NP 5793 (It has Realtek HD Audio manager software.)
Basically, some of the time, sound will play through headphones when the volume is muted. This only happens with headphones (and I'm assuming speakers that would be plugged into the same jack as well), but not the laptop's speakers. I can control the volume, and lower it to the point where its muted for all practical purposes, but if i actually mute the sound, it won't do anything. Once again...only with headphones.
I also just noticed that the reverse can apparently occur as well..headphones plugged in with no sound coming out, even though the volume is turned up. This problem is intermittent, not 100%, and I've been noticing some strange audio glitches since the most recent windows vista update. I thought they went away with a system restore, but then I noticed this.
Anyone know what's up?
EDIT: I've made some headway in determining the source of the problem. To make a long story short, the issue stems from the software getting confused as to whether or not there is anything plugged in to the headphone jack. Could this be the infamous green jack of death? I've had the computer for well over a year, and didn't notice anything until today. Plus, when the audio does come through, it sounds perfectly clear. Nevertheless, could this be a hardware issue? ie: my jack just being physically broken? If I open up the laptop, can I get a look in there and see if something's the matter? Thanks in advance.
Addendum: yup..confirmed. Re-examined everything, read some of the old threads and bingo..GJOD. -.- If I twist the headphones just right and push in just such and such a way then...i can get it to realize that the headphones are in...but I'm assuming it's only a matter of time before the jack stops operating altogether. is there anything that i can do about this myself, or does it have to go back to sager?

Sorry for the blatant *bump* but I have confirmed that I have a minor case of the green jack of death. If I position the headphones into the jack just right, then the computer will recognize that they're there..otherwise, something isn't making contact, and it doesn't recognize them. What should I do about this? How much will it cost to send this to Sager and have it repaired, and if I wait to send it in, will the jack get worse? Any info on this apparently pretty common problem is greatly appreciated!
