So I just got off the phone with PCMW and they are receiving the delayed Blu Ray drives for the m860tu early next week. For the incredibly long wait the initial EDGE buyers had to endure, they have upped the previously 2x writer to a 4x writer with 2 day shipping.

They will also be receiving the T9800 by next week as well and the sales rep told me the prices between the two components would most likely be very similar and if I wanted to swap it should be no problem. However, I turn to you guys for some more input.

Where I live I have yet to see a blu ray disk for sale, far less a blu ray player. However, you know how technology is, DVDs took a while to get out there, now there is one in almost every home and in fact piracy in the medium is so rampant now its almost common place to see someone selling DVD movies on the side of the road. I can only imagine the same will happen to blu ray. I've also read that blu ray disks are tougher and can still read even if its scratched etc. unlike a DVD so it may prove to be a great way to store data that I want to get off my hard drive without compromising quality.

Then there is the T9800 processor, which improvements I can only wonder from the P9500. I'd definitely get encoding done much faster, perhaps save myself a few minutes on every intense process thus allowing me to do more in a working day. It might not be much, but at this present point in time, it seems to offer me a more practical use in my field (video production) than would the blu ray. But in the long-term, what would prove its worth to a greater extent?

I have til Tuesday to decide before they send the batch out to the other EDGE customers in waiting and get either component in a decent space of time.

So opinions, what should I go for and why?

    I have seen blu-ray movies for $14.99.

the cpu will offer little improvement but the blu-ray is more future proof.

Personally, I would go for the CPU since I'm not a big fan of movies. About the future: Blu-Ray discs and drives will become more popular and cheaper while another series of CPU will be released. On a shorter perspective, go with the CPU as Blu-Ray discs are still very expensive, and burning Blu-Ray discs, for example, to watch on your TV implies that you have a Blu-Ray player already.

I'd say go with the CPU, then buy a Blu-Ray drive when it gets cheaper.

It seems to me you answered your own question - get the CPU. It has tangible significance, saving you time and allowing you to be more productive.

For the price of a few BD-R discs, you can get yourself a sizable external hard drive.

The optical drive is a simple upgrade should you want to upgrade later; the CPU not so much. Blu-ray drives are only going to get cheaper.

It's all a matter of preference and what you need. It seems like the CPU would be more useful for you.

I'd personally pick the Blu-Ray drive just because you already have a P9500 which is a very powerful CPU as it is, and a Blu-ray drive would be a nice complement to round out your system. Try not to think about future proof but rather usability. If you don't think that you will be buying any Blu-ray movies or at the very least renting them, then clearly a BR drive would be useless for you. While BR movies are a bit expensive still, you can get them at huge discounts online if you look around. Even renting them, provided that you rent a lot, would justify the BR drive upgrade for me. It's just more plausible for me to upgrade to a BR drive rather than to receive a marginal performance increase in a slightly faster CPU.

You're right, the P9500 itself is a powerful CPU as it is and I'm only shaving off minutes with the T9800 as opposed to hours when I had my Toshiba P4.

I'm mostly interested in the blu ray as a storage means and as a optional ability to offer clients HD versions of their products when blu ray players become more available down here aka cheaper. I already film in HD and its always a darn disgrace when I see this beautiful footage have to get compressed and go on to the likes of SD DVD (ugh), I just can't look back. Lol.

Maybe if it was a quad core or an extreme processor then it would be a fairer fight. But unless PCMW tells me I can get the x9100 for the price, I think I've made my decision.

    Blu Ray it is.

Thanks for all the help guys. Most appreciated. Reps for all who answered. :)

wow! im impressed. finally someone offering to burn up real true hd video on an upper class hd media.
your right, you made the right choice!.

had you been up against a quad core chip...that choice could have gone either way for sure.

Lol. Yep. I'll offer it, but of course it'll be a bit more costly to the client but in my opinion costly. And thank god for the m860tu HD screen and HDMI capabilities, I can show them the night and day difference either on my screen or attach it to their huge LCD (since world cup 2006, almost everyone bought one)

Cool, is it for gaming alone though? I've used a 320gb 5400rpm hard drive in another computer as opposed to my 7200rpm and I actually only see a difference in applications that require instant need for large pieces of data, such as, editing software and making HD collages on photoshop. Otherwise, the load times in the games are almost the same.

But yeh, based on what you want to get, unless you are selling the old parts, its gonna almost come up to the same as a new system.

Dang, I wish I had money to burn. Then I wouldn't have to always apply manipulative negotiation tactics and then feel bad on the inside. :(

Oh well. Survival is the word of the day. :D

Ugh, no thanks. I heard horror stories about either the read or write speeds. I'll take my old reliable spinning disks thank you very much :)
