Hey guys, trying to settle on whether to upgrade my current notebook (Clevo 900c /w a 2.5ghz core 2 duo and a 7950gtx) to a more current notebook, a 5797, same processor but with a 280M gpu, twice the power of my 7950. My question(s), is should I wait just in case the next big thing happens or is now a good time to do it? Its an age old question and I've been around computers long enough to understand the frustration of posessing dated equipment the moment you receive it, but I'd check to see if my research overlooked any new happenings in the near future.

Second, for a hundred dollars more I can get the NP9280 with a 2.5ghz core I7 processor. Is the price jump worth going to the 9280 or is the speed increase significant enough to notice. Let me know on your input, Thanks!

Actually its the Core i7 920 @ 2.66ghz not 2.5, and Yes it is definitely worth the extra hundred bucks, I wouldn't even hesitate.

Definitely go for the 9280 with the Core i7 and a GTX280M you wont be sorry and your friends will envy you. ;)

If you are ready and wanting a new lappy now, I say go for the I7 in a 9280. I am very tempted to get one of those myself even though my machine still runs current games very well. Actually, I think I will just build a desktop I7 and drop my current desktop Q9650 into my lappy. It should last a bit longer then :)

FYI: if it is pure gaming power you are looking for, then the 9850 (M980NU) running Sli 280s is a good choice as well. Basically, you trade CPU power for dual video cards. So, if you value CPU power, go with the 9280. If you want video strength, go with the 9850.

If you're fine gaming on what you have for a little bit longer (as in it's not hindering you from playing games) Nvidia is supposed to be introducing their new line of GPUs in Q4.

I'm worried that I'll repeat failed expectations for upgradability like my current laptop, the 900c. Is there any probability of MXM compatibility for the next gen gpu's?

As far as cpu needs, the only games that I think use more cpu compared to most games are my flight simulators (fsx, blackshark, and upcoming fighter ops). I don't think that warrants me to get an I7 rig.

    Blahhhhhhhh that 5797 look pretty

The current D900F does have future MXM compatibility. The 5797 will probably stop to have any future MXM compatibility starting with q1 2010 or even earlier.

I don't think it's wise to put any hope in the upgradability of a laptop's GPU. Even if it's the mxm 3.0, I feel that it's still not mature enough to ensure that the procedure will be a simple swap like the desktop.

My 2 cents.. I agree you should wait a bit more, or get a low priced 8800gtx which is a good step forward compared to 7950.

I'm tempted too I would like to see how a 280 sli would outperform my current specs but I bet it's worth waiting a buy nex gen gpu.

I believe in getting more than you think you need as long as it doesn't cost more than you can really afford.

However, if your current laptop serves your needs and you aren't constantly having to lower settings in all of your games and you aren't forced to play at settings you don't really enjoy then I wouldn't upgrade just yet.

    That's probably the best policy.

The temptation for new and more advanced stuff is always too big (I am talking about me).
