I'm not trying to stir the pot here, I'm just curious. Those of you who read and/or contributed to the l-o-n-g thread I started after I read the eye-opening "ODM" article at powernotebooks.com, know I'm still adjusting to this new world that existed right under my nose--and I didn't even know it.

I went back in my "Consumer's Reports" issues to the last time they did a comprehensive laptop review (Nov. 06 I believe), because I wanted to check the "frequency of repair" section they listed on each of the major name laptops. And yep, sure enough, they were all within a few points of each other--just what you'd expect if all the laptops (except maybe Apple) were made by just a few ODMs.

Anyway, part of the holdup for me right now is the video card not being available, so in the meantime I thought I'd take an informal survey, and ask you all who own Sager/Clevo laptops to tell your warranty repair stories--good or bad.

    Mention:

    1) The model number of your unit
    2) The reseller you bought it from
    3) What broke or was otherwise defective
    4) How the warranty repair process went for you

I was also thinking that I've never seen an article on this ODM thing in PC Mag, even in Dvorak's column. Hmm...

I'll take that as a compliment. :) No, I don't work for CR or anyone related to computers, magazines, reviews, etc. I'm just an info junkie, and when contemplating diving into uncharted (for me) waters, I like to hear about many different experiences people have had w/a product I'm thinking of buying.

If this topic somehow runs afoul of forum rules, I apologize.

Tho now that you mention it, I'm wondering if I should write a letter to CR, asking them to look into the whole ODM thing before their next laptop roundup. It might be a good idea to shine a light on this so-called "dirty little secret"--seems to me that notebook prices from the "names" might allegedly be kept artificially high, much like the diamond industry allegedly does.

I had a Sager Np4780 that I purchased from Discount laptops. I had a problem and I knew it was the graphics card. I emailed Discount Laptops about the issue and they told me to email Sager to get a RMA number. I received an email from Sager with a RMA number and shipping instructions. I had to pay shipping to Sager. They verified that it was a graphics card issue and they would replace the motherboard. I got a call 3 days later saying it was complete and did I want an upgrade in shipping. I told them no and I recieved a tracking number in email. I recieved the machine back and has worker without issues for 4 years. The repair was a month before the warranty ran out.

I can't help but notice that you list an Acer in your sig as your laptop--can you say why not another Sager?
