    Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this is in the right place (Mods, feel free to move it!)

I'm looking at getting either Batman or Robin (the NP9772 or NP9752 ), and I'm a little concerned about heat issues and noise output in the 15inch version.

My wife complains frequently when my M17 'sounds like a jumbo about to take off', which it does even whilst playing low-stress games (the match engine in Football Manager seems to run the fans up to high speeds!)

Is the heat management sufficient in the baby Batman that it stays relatively cool / quiet even during relatively high stress gaming situations - GTAV, Witcher 3, etc, or would I be better spending $100 or so more for the better heat dissipation of the 17 inch model?

Are there any other options you'd suggest? I hear Asus is pretty quiet, but they're pushing my budget to breaking point!

*Edit* I'm looking at these two because I think the DTP will help future-proof the laptop, but I'm not tied to the shiny processor! Also, I'm not an overclocker, so I'm not going to be stressing the system/heat/cooling by playing around with the voltages etc.

Temps are pretty well managed with the normal fan settings but to get the lowest temps do you want to use Fn + 1 for max fans. Unfortunately that will make the fans louder.

Keep in mind there is a desktop CPU in these so it does need the higher fans speeds. Consider the NP8652 or 8672 which use a mobile CPU.

If you want to TDP restrict it down to mobile levels while your wife is around that will help keep it quieter. You can create an XTU profile for quiet mode.

Thanks Hutsady. I'm more concerned with the noise (and keeping my wife happy!) than temps!!

Are there any GPU throttling issues with the NP8652/72 with the lower CPU's?

If you restrict either desktop platform to 47W and maybe tune the voltage and target clocks you should still hit a consistent 3.3ghz, plenty for games and it will be quieter than the mobile platforms due to the much larger heatsink.

Ok, now for the noob question. Would I have to reach into the heart of the BIOS to do that, or can I do it in the desktop (BIOS changes scare me, just because I wouldn't know how to undo any damage I did)

You would do it through intel XTU so you can change it on the fly and have different sets of settings saved depending on the presence of others ;)

Hut, I know this is off topic but is there a major performance difference between the 4gb and 8gb Nvidia 980M cards?

Only if you go over 4GB of vram usage.

Is that likely with current games?

There are many articles out there covering just that with the recent 970 desktop 3.5GB/4GB ram issue.

Right now only in a handful of games. But down the road it may make more of a difference. Do consider the GTX 980 desktop cards mostly just have 4GB.

No there isn't... 4GB vRAM is enough for the 980M when doing 1080p.. If you did 4K, then 8GB vRAM would be useful...
