Okay, so I left my laptop on tonight, as I was downloading some pretty big torrents (legal ofc) and wanted them to be completed as soon as possible.
Anyways, I placed the laptop in my livingroom because I didn't want the fans to bother me while trying to get some sleep...
So when I woke up I checked if the downloads were completed, and they were. Okay good, I thought. Then I checked a temperature-monitor program which I kept running overnight, and was absolutely shocked! Here's a screenshot.
I didn't know that µTorrent placed such a big load on the GPU and the CPU?? Something must be seriously wrong here, what should I do?
PS: The fans were in auto mode, and ambient temp. in my livingroom was about 29C / 84F, but still...
-
were the vents blocked (bottom and/or back) in anyway?
if so, then thats why.
make sure to only use it on hard, clean, flat surfaces (preferably a good notebook cooler)
Never use it on beds, couch, etc...
And if you are going to leave it on overnight, switch all fans to max speed... Fn+1 -
Where was the laptop exactly ? On the bed ?
And had you kept it @ Fn+3 (medium fan level) ? Or auto ?
-
As I said, the fans were in auto mode.
And it was placed on a wooden table. I am 100% sure that nothing blocked the vents neither below the laptop, or on the backside. (Exhaust)
Do you guys think that dust could have caused this? Cause I have never ever opened the laptop to clean the dust...I don't really want to void my warranty... -
How long has it been with you ? And when's the last time you cleaned it ? Maybe it's time for some cleaning (the fans could be clogged with dust) ....
-
yup, if you had it for over 3 months, then its clogged dust.
Go get a flashlight and shine it through the vents. -
If you've never cleaned it in over 5 months that can happen. But it seems still high even with clogged vents with just bit torrent running. A maximum of 100 GPU with just bit torrent seems like there might be something else that is wrong.

Question on how you are seeing your CPU & GPU temps:
Does the Sager mobo have a built in temp monitor that I can access through Vista? Or do I need a 3rd party monitor, i.e. have to buy something? -
Try this my friend
http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
(the download link is in the upper left, btw).
You can also see your Graphics card temps, even while in game with Rivatuner: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=81852 -
Yes. That is what I was looking for. Thx.
I also tried Riva, but was looking for a CPU temp monitor and Riva was way off. The HWmonitor gives me the right numbers. -
Hm, yes it might be the dust. I haven't cleaned the laptop ever since I got it, which is about 5 months ago.
But I'm afraid that I have no idea how to open up this laptop. I can't find any service manual...Also I am a bit afraid that opening the laptop will void the warranty? -
Don't worry, it certainly won't void the warranty.
Have a look at bwhxeon's cleaning guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=274107 -
Okay so it happened again. The GPU hit 100 degrees and the fans didn't speed up?? I thought the fans on this laptop were supposed to turn themselves on automaticly if the temperatures hits dangerous levels?
-
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
It didn't turn on while mine went to 70
-
The point is, even though FN+3 is enabled, I think the NP5792 needs some kind of system to make the fans turn on if CPU/GPU hits dangerously high temperatures...
-
I would advise you to clean out your fans. I have been putting it off for a while now because procrastination is my thing and I figured with a notebook cooler it was not that big of a deal.... how wrong I was.
This is after owning a Sager NP5790 since last august and never cleaning out the fans until this morning.... sorry for the poor image quality I just snapped them real quick with my voyager.

What the hey!?
I wouldn’t expect that even after 3 years, where do you use your lappy?
Cookie,
The fact that your system even gets hot, should be a concern considering these laptops have such a massive cooling system. If your fans don’t run, I’m wondering why you would even need to take the laptop in another room. My GPU, CPU, and hard drive never goes above 47c leaving it running all night and that’s with the fans running on low, turning up to medium once or twice an hour for a second. Granted, I have it set to power saver mode, but why not? Unless I’m benchmarking or playing games, I just let the innards down clock until I need the extra speed. If you’re new to high performance gaming systems, be it desktops or laptops, I could see where the fan noise might make you a bit uneasy if they were running on medium to high. If you’re gaming, then it doesn’t matter anyway. I do wish there were a fan control like on my dell, and don’t understand why there isn’t considering the high-tech people who owns this machine. You should have the ability to run the fans on LOW MEDIUM or HIGH, period! What you would need high for, I don't know. Even running at low, the system seems to run fairly cool.
While you’re cleaning your fans, I would suggest you check your thermal compound on the CPU. -
I can think of 2 things:
You either left it on a fabric, with the fans blocked by material, or two, there is a hardware malfunction in which case you should contact your reseller ASAP.
I`m inclined to believe the first assumption.
You see, my Sager NEVER EVER went over 80C, since IT CANNOT if you raise the back and keep it on a solid surface.
Raising the back of the laptop not only LOWERS the temps but provides better air flow under the laptop, thus allowing the fans to suck normal air, not heated one.
If as you said, the fans did NOT kick in, it`s surely a hardware / software mis-communication . -
If you do leave the computer on all night just to download or surf the internet, use window mode “Classic” or “Standard” to keep the GPU from running Aero. I’ve noticed that my fans stay mostly on low using those two modes, that’s if you’re using windows Vista of course. Just restart the computer afterwards, later!

Gaming notebooks have their fans on more constantly than normal notebooks... so they would accumulate more dust in a shorter period of time.
So...... KEEP YOUR NOTEBOOKS CLEAN. -
What I said is about as accurate as I could have stated, unless I would have added the word "mine" to it. Of course some users accumulate more dust than others gaming notebook or not, I found that out on the many notebooks/desktops I've serviced. I can use mine without cleaning it for a year, and I would not have the amount of dust Fluffyjr2 has pictured. Should you keep your notebook clean? Of course! But the amount and frequency of the cleaning also depends on how and where you use your notebook. Fans, dust, heat sinks are nothing new in the gaming world or computer world in general. I've seen that much dust on far slower units, some more some less. And there are also users that don't seem to accumulate any dust. I upgraded an old dell laptop not too long ago, and I swore that thing looked like it just came right off the assembly line it was so clean on the inside. The M570 series is so simple to clean, and it should not be hard to keep it clean. Take the bottom plate off, and you have access to just about everything a typical user should have access to. Its much easier than having to take my Dell completely apart, to access the fans/cpu.
I should have made a smiley when I quoted and added Fluffyjr2 pictures, as I was mainly laughing at how much dust he had.
I wouldn't expect that amount of dust on my system even after three years of use.
But I get what youre saying Gophn, later!
Chit! Already 7am, I'm out! -
If the CPU hits 80 or so, the fans kick in, no problem. But if the GPU hits 100, the fans don't do anything! They just leave the GPU melting...Another thing that's quite funny, is that I DON'T EVEN USE THE GPU, I'm only in the Windows desktop browsing websites with FN+3 and the GPU hits 100? *** is that all about...And I use Windows XP so Aero is not the cause...
