I am concerned about these temps but wasn't sure if it is a legitimate problem or just how my laptop is. During games, my temp climbs all the way to about 95 degrees on the GPU. During idle web surfing, it is not uncommon for my GPU to idle at 65 or so. I have used a cooler during gaming but that does not lower my temps a single degree.
Is it possible that I would need to maybe remove and resit the fan on the actual GPU? I have replaced coolers on desktop cards several times so I am not too concerned about the undertaking but I am worried about the damage to the laptop components from the prolonged exposure to the high temps. Plus, it burns my hand when I am playing.

my gpu idles around 60 so 65 isn't too bad.
right now i'm watching a movie and have 2 tabs open in FF and it's listed at 71. -
I wonder if there is a stronger fan available aftermarket? It doesn't look like there is much to the cooling on the unit. and the fan is barely audible even at 100% so I wouldn't mind a higher RPM fan if they sell one. Is this an option?
-
Depending on if the fan is odd proportions, it definitely could be done. If it's a standard size/proportion, you could just get the same size (bigger if space allows) and replace it. I have never opened up a laptop, so I couldn't tell you about the connections. You may have to solder it, but that's easy enough. Red is +, black is -, any other wire would be a fan speed control/monitor. You would want to make sure the fan you choose has the speed control wire.
I may seem like a complete idiot around here, but I just do not know laptops. Give me some wires and tell me to solder and I'm good. -
I am also having the same problem (...along with a million others), but it started pretty recently.
Before my temps wouldn't go above 85c even when gaming for hours, but now within 10 minutes, I'm at 95c. As soon as it starts getting into the 90-92 range, the picture starts stuttering badly and the game is unplayable. (I think this is probably the GPU downclocking because it gets too hot.) Using the cooler helps prolong the process to maybe 20 minutes, but it starts stuttering eventually and it's impossible to play even 30-minutes at a time. I'm going to have Sager have a look at this problem as well when I ship it in for other repairs. -
Hi folks,
reishi & all ...
Sager 2096 ... I am not sure if the Thermal Compound is also applied to the GPU or only the CPU.
That said one of the Gifts tha NVIDIA GPU card has given the laptop world is these High Temps I suppose their Norm. That is why I purposely get an ATI GPU in a laptop.
Reishi, you might want to look at the Sager 2096 Owners Lounge Thread ... they might have more input for you.

Also, you might try a simple solution of elevating the back of your laptop with something (1/2" or so) to get some air circulation. And make sure if you get a Cooler ... get the CORRECT one for your laptop ... as far as Airflow into bottom of the laptop at the right places ... check here

Hope this was of some help!

Yoyoman, have you tried cleaning your vents?
-
No I don't have any screwdrivers with me to open this thing up....But it could definitely be the vents because my apartment is in the basement and it can get quite dusty. I'm going to be sending the laptop in next week anyways.
However, I did pick up a Zalman NC2000 on ebay, so that should help as well. -
Yeah this thing does get dusty. I was quite surprised when I opened mine up - I've only had it since September so I figured it would still be clean but it was really dusty in there. I still haven't cleaned it yet though lol
-
Well, I opened up the case today and blew out the vents and fan but there really wasnt any dust build up to speak of. Is there a tear down available for the 2096? I took the parameter screws loose hoping to just be able to lift the frame off so I could expose the full GPU but it felt like there was still something holding it in place. I didnt really want to force anything if there is a series of snaps that I had missed. I have decided to give the thermal paste a look and perhaps replace it with some left over AS5 from my last build.
After that, I am just at a loss. Games aren't very fun when you are burning your hand on the keyboard and the frames are going so slow due to a throttled down GPU the is hitting its upper limits
