... figuratively, not literally!
I want to thank the forum for being patient and answering my questions, especially to Justin who was patient and helpful in answering what I am sure were very amateurish and basic questions.
As someone who has been milking a fairly common Dell laptop for the past 5 years, I've been perusing the forum and have come close to buying a Sager but always found some reason to endure my current paperweight.
No more! As of this morning, I put in my order for a 5797. It helps assuage the feeling of being at work while most of my department are not.
I am fairly out of the loop and I am sure I'll have plenty of questions once I receive this beautiful machine (is it legal to name a child 5797?), and I hope you are all as patient with me then as you were prior to purchase.
For those who are interested, here will be the most recent addition to my family:

Hope you will enjoy your new Sager as much as I do. Remember you can overclock the QX9300 by 2 in the bios without any heating issue. -

I'll remember that, but I'll have enough on my plate when I first get the machine. Truth be told, I haven't really seen Vista, let alone used it to any great degree. Plus I've a striking unfamiliarity with laptops in general and haven't used a relatively current and powerful computer in years.
I'll worry about taking the training wheels first off the Ducati before OC'ing and seeing what the baby can really do!
Thank you very much for the reminder! -
no problem, just thought I mention that if you want to OC the QX9300.
-
im in the same boat as you, i wish i could afford a loaded 5797 though

I hear you, BD. I was hesitant at spending the money, especially given the economy, but my old computer is falling apart at the seams and I should've replaced it years ago.
If I say I'm going to keep this laptop for 5 years, the costs average to less than a cup of coffee per day of use.
Cue Sally Struthers. Enter Tweed stage left. Bow. Cue applause. Cue throwing of roses and various garments from the audience. Bow. Bow. Blow kisses to the crowd. Exit stage right.
Justification on an extravagant purchase complete. *smile* -
Nice!!! u will be the only one who'll be able to play GTA4 with >30 fps!!
but seriously, uber purchase!! -

Thank you both for the kind words. I am ecstatic - I stumbled onto this forum about two years ago and, to put it mildly, my eyes were opened to a world of notebook computing I had thought was impossible.
I have not been an active participant on the forum. I was, and to a large degree still, a leech. A parasite, feasting on the knowledge and acumen of a healthy and robust host.
Aside from the quality of the product which speaks for itself, I was also very impressed by the people here: intelligent, well-meaning and very helpful. The trifecta!
That is also what led me to place my order through Xotic, though it was a coin toss between them and powernotebooks. I don't remember the exact posts from early '07, but I do remember the tenor of Justin's writings and found myself impressed on a number of levels.
Everything I've seen in late '08/early '09 reaffirms that position.
The waiting is indeed going to be more difficult than forking over the cash, but that's out of my hands. As I wrote to Justin, when he offered still more help that there is little to do now except to wait for him and his team to work their magic.
From all that I've read, I'm have no qualms at all. I know I'll receive a great product, offered at a fair price with a stellar support structure. And to ensure that it will be a great product with a stellar support structure, I know I can't rush them.
I can endure. I might not like it, but there are worse things than needing to wait a little bit before getting a computer.
I will definitely give an update when I get it and, in the interim, I will be more active on these boards. I am far from knowledgeable, but I hope to at least be respectful, ask intelligent questions that hopefully others will find helpful and contribute more.
I hope everyone is doing well, and best wishes in the new year to you and your loved ones.

Hey, I actually just closed my eyes and hit the order button a few days ago myself. One thing that I'm kind of worried about though is the eSata issue. Something like that not working on a $2500 laptop (or, in your case, let's just say a bit more than that) is unacceptable. Any updates on that?
-
BT:
Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything on the eSata issue. I read a few people were having trouble, but I don't know if it's an isolated issue or something more systemic.
I find it difficult to believe that such a key component would be flawed across the board, but stranger things have happened.
I'd be interested in hearing more about this, so if something comes across your screen give a shout!
Happy new year!
-Josh -
make sure to post about it as soon as you do a thorough check
-
I'll definitely check it out on mine when I get it. Also, what's the deal with this thing apparently restarting at will? Starting to get nervous...
-
Restarting at will?
That`s not a common issue, maybe somebody just had some bad luck. I wouldn`t worry about it.
Thank you! Pulled the trigger on a 5797...
