I just wanted to write a thank you to Xotic, which from what I've heard would apply to all the Sager resellers that frequent these forums. Brett at XoticPC and I have exchanged no fewer than 50 emails and have had at least 5 live chats. I have asked pricing questions, technical questions, and have switched my order a couple times. Every single time I have received a timely response demonstrating complete knowledge of whatever topic we are talking about. He has always been polite and it seems more like I am talking to a knowledgeable friend as opposed to a sales rep. I know that the resellers on here do transactions on a daily basis, but to me $2000+ is a boatload of money that I can only spend once every couple of years. I just wanted to say thank you for all the time you have spent addressing all my personal questions.

This also applies to babyhemi, paladin, mythlogic, and MALIBAL, as they have always answered any questions I have asked them in these forums. I hope that it is not inappropriate to post this, but I just wanted these guys to know that I appreciate all their work.

Whether this is appropriate or not it is good to read/hear. I decided to bail out of the Alienware camp and check out Sager/Clevo and I am amazed at what you can get for the $$$. Especially since I am tech savvy. I am excited to figure out which SB rig I buy.

Sk3tch, I looked at Alienware as well, but decided on Sager because IMHO you get so much more for your money. The laptop on my sig that I ordered will be my first Sager, and I can't wait. They all seem to receive awesome reviews from forum members. I also like the fact that they are not as flashy as AW, although I know that some people prefer the lights and design on the AW machines. Either way, I think you will be happy with what you find when you check out what you get for the money with a Sager.

Justin and MALIBAL, I really don't hand out praise very often, mostly because everyone I've dealt with in the past doesn't deserve it. However, you guys go well beyond the expectations that I used to have, and certainly deserve a heartfelt thank you for it.

that's my thoughts too. my cousin just got a m17x r3 that he spent just over 3k on.. i was going to go with alienware too, but i wouldn't have been able to match his budget lol. now i feel like i'll be beating his rig while saving close to $1k

+1 for the great reps here on nbr. you all have been really helpful in switching over to Sager/ high end performance laptops :)

I looked at the R3 (while I could) and I looked at the 8150 / 8170, and it wasn't even a difficult decision. Like you said, I am going to save a boatload of money, and I have about 4 times as many configuration options with a Sager reseller than I would with AW. Not to mention, I get to deal with a reseller from start to finish and beyond instead of dealing with Dell (shudder).

Yeah, looks like it :). The 8150 is an awesome machine, and the 485 is...well, the best there is anywhere. An SB equipped machine with a 485 will ensure that you are good to go for quite a while. Have you speced and priced one out yet?

Brett, no problem. You certainly deserve my thanks.

Yeah, I've just been playing on a few of the reseller's websites. Looking at the i7 2630, GTX 485M, 8GB RAM...contacted Xotic (Hutsady) to see if I can get the 500GB placed in the optical bay so I can buy a separate SSD for the primary. Also trying to decide on glossy versus matte (I've had two MacBook Pros previously which were glossy and just fine for me) and whether to spend the $60-$100 for no dead pixels. It's tough because around $2k would be the best for me and with some of the above (matte, no dead pixel, i7 2720) I get to $2500. :) I usually upgrade every year so I am thinking a no to the i7 upgrade.

I have to agree with the OP, the resellers really do add a lot of value to buying a Sager/Clevo. They work hard to make a sell by answering our many questions by email, chat and over the phone (on the resellers dime when using the 800 numbers) That is one of the reasons I am sold on these laptops. Try getting this much personal attention with any of the majors. Also they are truly knowledgeable about their products (they are not reading from a menu).

    Thanks Resellers!!

Sk3tch, I am sure that they can put the 500GB HDD in the optical bay so you can have a SSD as your primary. As far as the glossy, I have read that the people who have it say it doesn't show reflections as bad as other glossy screens they have had in the past, so you may not necessarily have to go with the matte screen unless its really important to you. As far as the processor goes, just remember that even the lowest SB quad core (2630) is faster than the extreme processor (with no OC) from the last generation. In fact, it even beats out some desktop i7 processors, so even if you don't upgrade it it won't be slow. I know how you feel trying to sort out what to upgrade and what to leave alone, and it isn't easy.

Othonda, you are quite right about trying to get this kind of service from one of the bigs...it just won't happen. Period.

Glad to hear you got great service. Wether it's a big or small company, rich or poor person, 2k is a boat load of money to anyone. No one should ever pressure you into buying anything.

The best policy when it comes to ANY purchase, be it laptop, car, house this is what i always go by as a consumer:

I want to buy a car i don't want you to sell me one.

With this in mind you'll pick out the best of the best of any retailer(s).

I always follow this motto as well:

I'd rather a customer leave happy/informed having bought nothing than miserable and having paid $3,000.

Both of those lines are awesome ways of thinking about things. I don't think I've met any salespeople besides Sager resellers that adhere to the last one.

Just a question, guys. Is there any special reason that would make ordering from a reseller a more attractive option as opposed to ordering directly from Sager themselves? Sager offers the same laptops for slightly lower prices when I checked.

Apparently dealing with Sager directly can be cumbersome and unpleasant. Their Better Business Bureau rating and resellerrating is an F. But all the resellers are an A. The resellers will manage your purchase, warranty, and any interface that has to do with Sager. Sager / Clevo offer great machines but their customer service has a lot to be desired.

Sager themselves never sell for less unless there is an error in pricing by a reseller that is unintentional. Many resellers offer much more as far as support and warranty coverage like a minimum of 3 year labor warranty, 7 days a week support, and other perks... :)

Thanks for the helpful input, guys! But this was what I was referring to for the "lower price".

NP5160 on Sager's site ($879): custom gaming laptops - Welcome to Sager Notebooks

    NP5160 or "XM15" on DigitalStorm's site ($899): Digital Storm xm15 Level 1 (15.6 Inch Laptop)

The configurations on both machines are exactly identical I believe. DigitalStorm simply renamed it XM15 and removed the "Sager" emblem from the back.

I wouldn't call Digitalstorm a reseller though. They're in the same boat as Malibal in that they don't technically resell Sager.. they instead market them as their own brand. Malibal technically sells Malibal brand laptops, as Digitalstorm sells Digitalstorm branded laptops. There is a slight but significant distinction.

Xotic sells the np5160 for $879 as well with the same configuration as Sager, but with the 3 year labor/1 year parts warranty. Which makes it a better deal than Sager.

You have to check around though, the distinction between reseller and "own brand" type places is very fine.

I see. Thanks for the clarification on DigitalStorm. I noticed another site that rebrands the Sagers and sell for higher prices as well. In terms of raw cost, Xotic currently has the lowest available.

I have a Digital Storm xm15 (Clevo) laptop, and it's stock looking. There's no Sager or Digital Storm emblem on it. The price difference for a DS xm15 and a Sager laptop is that Digital Storm does a burn-in test while Sager just builds and ships it to you. If you got any issues, you will need to send it back to them for repairs or fix it yourself. I have had my laptop for 6 months, and there's no issues so far.

Out of the resellers of Clevo brand laptops, Falcon-Northwest is the most expensive because they can paint your laptop for an additional $500.

I'm a Electrical Engineering student at UCLA and keep up fairly well with laptop technology (especially right before I need to make a purchase). After doing a ton of research, I ordered a NP 5160 (which is due sometime in March), owing much thanks to alot of the resellers who post here (Xotic, Mythlogic, MALIBAL, etc) and have imparted so much insight to have swayed me into the Sager/Clevo brand of laptops.

I would be very very interested in doing what you guys do in providing the same quick, personalized service that you have done for all of us. :)

Sager does a burn in test on all machines before they ship. It would not be in the best interests of any company to assemble it and ship it without testing.

I thought as much. I checked out DigitalStorm before finding the actual Sager site, and I think most of the "extras" they offer over any Sager reseller are just marketing speak for stuff that is done at the factory. They want a lot more for what amounted to nothing in the 8130 based model they had. I got the 8150 for not much more from Malibal with a better GPU.

8150 for almost the same price as the 8130 with a better (exponentially) graphics card? Sounds like an awesome deal!
