The main reason why I'm inclined to get a m15x is because of the stealth mode. It's quite, and has a good battery life.

How is the 5793 in terms of noise, and does it have something similar to Stealth Mode on the m15x? I'm taking this to libraries and lecture halls, and I can't have a loud laptop pissing everyone off.

Also, how fast do these things ship, from somewhere like XoticPC?

With Fn+3 "medium" the fans are ultra quiet. I wouldn't know about stealth mode, but I guess that's equivalent of "Power Saver" mode in Windows Vista.... Order processing and shipping through XoticPC should be rather *frighteningly* fast ! :D

5793 is actually only weight 0.2 lbs more than m15x. my indicator showed 2hours and 50 mins for battery. it only become loud for gaming. took me 2 weeks to received it with UPS ground shipping, basically 1 week for built and 1 week for shipping

Damn, 2 days is pretty fast.

So you guys are saying that the 5793 on medium is stable and ready for lecture halls and libraries? What do you guys think about bringing a 17 inch to class? Is it too big?

Took me forever to decide to buy it, but I got my 579x from Xotic in about a month, I got it when it was still "hot" .
You`re looking at about 2 weeks before seing it..
It`s not heavy,if you can carry it. It`s nice to have a full sized keyboard and a beautiful 17 inch screen :)
About the noise, the latest firmware fixes that,it`s decent now, unless you`re in a church or where babies need ULTRA QUIETNESS,it won`t bother anyone.
Battery life, well, there are various tweaks. I`ll do a full guide about this pretty soon.
    The 5793 is a smart choice :)

I wouldn't call it ultra quiet. Granted it's not like it's unbearably loud, but it's far from silent.

Well, could I take this into a quiet place like the library and not piss people off? The m15x on stealth mode IS ultra quiet.

I have no doubt that this is a smart purchasing choice, but is the m15x an even better one for university? I need portability, quietness and power.

The things that are holding me back from the m15x are flaws its known to ship with, the price, the lack of a fingerprint reader, and the fact that its an AW. I built my own PC, and I used to think that anyone who had an AW PC was either a huge idiot/tool or didn't care about money...

So I really want to get the 5793, but I'm just not sure whether its ready for university or not (in terms of size and noise).

Then I suggest you wait for the M860TU, it will be more portable and it will feature the Montevina platform which should have something similar to that 'stealth' mode you`re referring to.
    It`s only ~1 month away.

I need it by June 15th. Hence my dilemma.

The thing is that if you order it now, 15 June should be safe, but I don`t recommend it.
I would chose the 5793 since it`s proven its power and qualities.
The 860TU might have issues, and you don`t want to be the guinee pig...

I wouldn't take it to the library or small classrooms. Even with the med fan setting, the noise is still audible from 15 ft away. That said, the noise doesn't bother me. As I said, it's not unbearably loud, and more importantly, the fans are spinning at a constant speed with the med fan setting. If the fans were to vary their speed, then it'd drive me nuts and distract me to no end.

Well, I've used mine in lecture theatres and uni library with no problems (uni library, not ultra quiet) just make sure that you don't point the vents at the back of someone in fronts head in a lecture theatre...

Since there are no new updates to the NP5793 there shouldn't be any delays if you order. XoticPC should be able to get it to you within a week, 2 at the latest, in my opinion. As far as fan noise goes, I've heard one of these things. It's not that bad, but certainly not ultra quiet, esp. while your gaming. Let's put it this way, after a visit to Taco Bell, I can pass wind louder than the fans on the 5793.

Lol,that`s the first time I heard that :D
    Tell you what:
-Churches,nursery halls and yoga practice halls are off limits :D
-all other places will be fine, I`m fairly convinced that the 5793 is even quieter than my 5791 , and even that is pretty quiet with FN+3 mode...

Ugh, there are so many conflicting views on this. :( I'm still not convinced that the 5793 is quiet-place-friendly, whereas I'm sure the m15x is.

Any university students here with the 5793 who uses it regularly in the library and classroom/lecture hall?

Here what, does anyone have a bloody video camera with good sound?

Record the laptop on normal or 'quiet' speed and upload it to youtube (in a quiet room resembling the sound level of a lecture hall or library), cause even I am friggin confused on whether this laptop is loud or not based on the whole 'Let me put it this way....' or 'Now consider if there was this or that situation'.

from NYU here, the fan is not noticeable at all as long as you are not gaming.

This may not be indicative of all classroom environments, but I've taken my NP5793 to several class discussion sessions in fairly small rooms with maybe 10-15 people, and with FN+3, no one notices the noise at all. On the other hand, however, there aren't very many pauses in the discussion, people are usually talking, and the air conditioner in the room creates a lot of white noise in and of itself, so I'd take this anecdote with a grain of salt.

Hey Eleron i know the m15x has depending on the parts you want can have a huge back order is Sager able to produce more so the wait isn't as long or will i still have to wait about a month to have it shipped from sager like the m15x. (talking about the 15.4 sager coming in a month)

    Thanks

Are the fans in this unit solderd in or can they be replaced with different fans that run quieter without voiding the warrenty? Honestly though if the several larger sager/clevo resellers would just contact clevo and ask if quieter fans can be installed this probably wouldn't be a debate every time someone new comes these boards and ask about the noise.

dont you think they would have done that by now instead of working day and night to make firmware? not going to happen. maybe with the montevia refresh though.

I doubt the worked day and night, maybe a day...and even that was done by Sager Notebooks and not clevo. One would have also assumed that they would have initially added that third fan toggle when the released the 570RU but they didn't, and how long was before it was added?

To be fair, I believe Clevo worked on the firmwares per Sager's request. But I guess they are now done with it even though it still has major problems such as vibration issues for some machines.

Man, trying to get an ultra-powerful-ultra-mobile-ultra-quiet notebook is quite a task... and going against my clevo cult tendencies I gotta say the m15x (or 860TU- too late) is your best choice. The Fn+3 fan function for the 5793 is quiet- but old ladies at the library with their hearing-aides on full blast just to yell at kids that sneeze too loud might not like the modest noise, but honestly, 30% of the people I know breath louder than the 5793 low fan speed.
