A few months ago when I first heard the news that Nvidia had launched the 8800M cards, the first thought that came to my mind was that we would finally see a 15.4" notebook with some really sick graphics (GTS) and the 17" systems with the top-end (GTX). Unfortunately as things have turned out, Gateway is the only manufacturer that is offering the GTS version.
One would have thought that with the 15.4" models currently topping out at the 8600M GT, someone would be wise enough to exploit this cavernous gap that plugs portability and performance. But what do we see? The m15x that is plagued with issues and the M860TU that still has to see the light of day.
I honestly believe it is a great opportunity if they could offer something like that starting at 1600 or so. Take a look at Gateway and the terrific price-to-performance option they're giving with the P171 FX series. Why do you think has no major name announced or come out with the GTS in a 15.4"?

I think I heard that the 8800mGTS is just a gimped version of it's big brother.
So It probably is similar in size, if not the same.
But I totally agree.
Please usher in the age of ultra performance 15" laptops!
I want to start seeing 14 inchers come standard with 9500/9600's
See 15 inchers with 9650's +
Then by the time I rebuy, 15 inchers will be amazing... -
Yeah, being the crippled twin brother of the GTX one would expect it to probably have a little less problem with heat, thereby making it more suited for a smaller chassis. I'm really really surprised that such a system hasn't been announced yet.
-
That's because it wouldn't really do any good to performance. Clevos should all have the best cards available.
-
Well, wouldn't that actually be the whole point of this? A notebook that is one rung lower than the maximum performance threshold represented by the GTX, available at a more affordable price-point in a more widely acceptable chassis size.
-
I'd like the 8800M GTX better and so does everyone here (well, almost everyone). I wouldn't settle for second best.
-
That holds true without a doubt, and I am in no way or form saying that it should not be the case. I'm only contemplating the possibility of a 15.4" with a GTS that could theoretically be priced about $200-300 lesser than the GTX. Such a system would make a lot more people look at it, thereby increasing sales for Clevo. If I am currently on the lookout for a fast, portable 15.4" with great (if not the best of the best) performance, then I'm sure I'm not alone and there must be significant number of prospective buyers.
It's essentially the same thing as having one system with GTX SLI, one with a single GTX and one with a single GTS. Each is more powerful than the next, but each also has a slightly different market segment that it is targeting. More choice is never bad. -
I think for a total fact. the thing that makes people want the 15" clevo is the FACT that it DOES have an 8800mGTX. and none other.

The 8800GTS option
