So who, here, is a member of the EEEE EEEE EEEE club?

I was wondering where the hell the noise is coming from (the HDD itself?)... and if it is the HDD, is it only a particular size/speed/brand of HDD?

My HDD is 320GB 7200rpm. I've yet to find out the exact brand used by Kobalt, unless anybody here knows the answer to that?

Do you mean the noise that you can turn off by enabling bluetooth?

Just look under device manager, post the model number and we'll tell you what it is

the sound is coming from where the end key is (red circle) and not where the hard drive is.

Accordingly to the M860TU´s service manual, that spot is were the bluetooth module and the MDC(modem) are.

Try disabling the bluetooth module and the modem via Device Manager, so you can be sure on what/wich one is making that noise.

    ;)

As far as I know, the beeping is coming from the silver heatsink near that red circle that was pointed out.

I physically took off the back panel of the laptop, turned it on, and stuck my ear right beside the opened laptop mobo, and it's DEFINITELY coming from there.

It stops it on mine. So, this means it is the Bluetooth module causing it? I dread to think what the EEEE EEEE EEEE means it is doing when Bluetooth is not active. You'd think it would make a noise if active...

How do I disable the module? I can't see Bluetooth listed in Device Manager to disable it. I just wanna try stopping it from being recognised, just to see if this makes the noise go away. I could keep Bluetooth permanently on, but I'm one of those people who are a bit wary of exposing myself to wireless and Bluetooth for extended periods. You don't know how safe things like this are. Our brains do operate on waves and there's some argument that we can be affected by stuff like this. :eek2:

P.S. I discovered this morning that the electric shocks and electric vibrations I was getting in my hands everytime I used my laptop on my bed was due to my electric, heated underblanket being on, which was conducting electricity through the laptop somehow!!!

Thats is the best option... and if you need it in the future, just use one cheap USB Bluetooth pen.

You can remove it competely or just unplug the cabe.

Just seen your email Cat - as MrDJ said it would be very helpful if everyone could contact their manufacturer and let them know exactly what's happening, that way we can pin the issue down as it's not always easy going through threads on non manufacturer forums (no offence of course).

We have reported the issue and are waiting on a response. We have built replica systems and I have one on my desk now with BIOS 08 and it's dead silent, bluetooth on or off so it's not an inherent problem, must be a combination.

Ha! I can hear the sound in MrDJs video and my nexus so far didn't do it. I always thought my hearing was burnt by all the years of loud punk in the mp3 player but it seems that at least for me the noise is not there. Specs are:
    Screen - 15' 1680x1050 WSXGA X-Glass
    Processor - Intel® Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53GHz Dual Core Processor
    Video Card – NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GTS 512MB DDR3
    Memory 1 - 4GB OCZ DDR3-PC3 1066Mhz 8-8-8-27 2x 2GB DIMMs
    Turbo Memory – None Selected
    Bluetooth – Bluetooth V2.0 Module
For the hard disk I have a WD 320Gb 7200rpm but the one without the free fall sensor thingy.

Maybe is the 9500 processor? Is the only thing I see different (except for the GT and the GTS but that's not where the nosie is coming from if I understand it well...).

Isn't it just the usual Core 2 Duo CPU whine? That's what I've been thinking it is.

Type 'whine' into the NBR search.

Are you telling me the Core 2 Duo has always had a whine like that and Intel has never seen it fit to fix that?

How come I never heard about this before when people suggest to go core 2?

    Hi Neil,

I didn't notice the sound from the start, but then... I didn't really put my head anywhere near the END key as I had no cause to until recently when somebody mentioned they had a whiny sound that was coming from there.

Where would I get BIOS 08, and what file name is it (as I have Driver Detective installed and that automatically and successfully searches for the latest drivers and chipsets, so I just wanted to confirm the file name it last installed).

Wow! I'm loving the cute picture presentation too. Very useful sound capture for everyone, Mr. DJ. So, Milcs was sane all along, we're now mumbling. :)
My laptop is currently chirping with delight! EEEE EEEE EEEE EEEE. High Performance Mode... Fans on (not switched the cooling mat on yet, but that makes no difference to stopping the sound anyway).

    combined 1.01.08 bios/1.00.08 kbc/ec

Boot to dos using a usb stick then run step1.bat followed by step2.bat

So far I know of one failure when updating to this bios on this unit, but hopefully that is the exception to the rule
