My specs, this game - Can play? What settings? Anyone any thoughts?

I always have trouble figuring out what settings are best. I don't know what impacts performance most, or which to set as high/low.

    Any help is appreciated!

Have you got FRAPS? if not, install and run it and set everything to maximum. Then if the framerate is too slow start changing settings one by one until you get a smooth playing experience.

Max out every setting but start with no AA.
If you have a comfortable performance, raise the AA level to one notch (2xAA) and monitor your framerate using something like Fraps.

Most of the time, you can start with High settings, then move on from that, or in case of an heavy game, turning down some effects such Shadows, Post Processing to Medium helps a bit.

Anyway Skyrim is working beatifully so far based on what ive been reading on low spec'ed machines than yours, i guess youll be fine as well.

Also if youre not getting more than 60fps, its wise to keep vsync disabled.

I'm getting pretty choppy frames on my 6990m. It's weird. I expected much better performance, and changing settings did virtually nothing.

word on the street is that ATI cards are having some significant problems with the game. i expect some skyrim drivers in the next day or two. and keep in mind - its bethesda. they are notorious for releasing poorly optimized, buggy messes. im sure a patch will be close in coming too.

Sounds like poor driver support to me. The tomshardware review had the game scaling nicely even on older systems. Thats why I always wait 3 months before I play PC games. After the patches and driver updates things should get better.

A few minor bugs here and there, but that's to be expected on release day. BF3 had new drivers the day after the release. Hopefully we'll see something by monday.

I'm loving everything about this game so far... anyone remember TES III: Bloodmoon? Very similar only on a MASSIVE scale.

Now, i've been raging on the self detected settings the past hours, set to ultra 1080.
Runs absolutely smooth with no hickups and looks quite stunning.

Comment on the game coming from Dragon Age, the story seems kinda flat so far (this also being my first elder scroll game), I really hope it picks up.

    Runs super nice!

I've got similar specs (2630M, Radeon 6970M, 8GB ram, etc) and I'm only getting 10-15 fps on high settings, even with the resolution turned down to 720p.

I'm assuming this is not normal? Any idea what I can do to fix it? Updating my video card drivers didn't help.

I've got an X7200 here with SLi GTX485m and on Ultra get 60fps most of the time but as soon as I go to a town or village the framerate takes a dive. Reducing detail settings does next to nothing to fix it either. Considering I can run BF3 at ultra (no AA) flawlessly I expected better here and feel that there is either a driver bug or it's just poorly optimised overall.

One other thing, do not use Ultra shadows, in places like caves it will kill your framerate. I changed them to high, couldn't notice anything different visually but got an extra 20fps.

You are also using 11.9, yes? Perhaps the issue lies in a conflict with the newest drivers that people might be using?

    Oh well heres my input.
    Single 485m at 680/1600.
My settings were auto ultra but performance was creepy.
After reading around I've turned down shadows to high and object details to high.
I have max AF, 4xMsaa and Fxaa enabled. I'm getting 45 of average, with max being 60fps as vsync is on, being 40 the lowest.
Sincerely I was hoping for a better performance, but reading around seems that high end gpus (desktop) struggle to have 60fps as well.

I have ultra settings with my GTX 485M (stock clocks), AA disabled, AF16x and frame rate is usually 60 fps, 40 fps occasionally and very rarely 30 fps. You should try playing at stock clocks.

Elvind: what does that means? Stock clocks can't best an overclock, it doesn't here in various games and benchmarks, it doesn't here at least..but seriously i never came toward a situation where stock clocks beat an overclock. Thanks thought:

LaptopNut: I'm running fxaa+4xMsaa with an average of 45fps. You're running without AA and I guess no Fxaa?
Where are you getting those framerates? I used the first town in the first quest as a benchmark.
Thanks for your input guys :)

johnnyman27...a side question? For your P151HM1, did your laptop initially come with a 6970? If so, how can I buy a P151HM1 with a better graphics card besides the default 560m.

Some times, different games react to different clocks at times, so it is always wise to check stock to make sure nothing strange is happening.

575/1500 could be more stable than 680/1600....

i don't want to get everyones' hopes up but i'm seeing a fairly substantial difference between my 11.11(0?) drivers and and 11.9.

i uninstalled my current and installed 11.9. everything is maxed out, fxaa isn't enabled though, and i'm getting pretty stellar results.

    20-30 fps before.
    45+ish consistently now.

    p150hm. 8gb ram. 2630qm. 6990m.
will be replacing with a crucial m4 ssd on wednesday.

Ok ive played a bit more, im on second quest.
So disabling AA and enabling FXAA pretty much raised my average FPS around 55-60. In cities like Whiterun, however, when theres alot of smoke or particles on screen it dips to 34-40. Hardly below 40 anyway.
If i disable FXAA and enable 2xAA i get same results, less blurry (obviously) but with 5fps gain.
The game is maxed out except for Shadows set to HIGH and Object detail to HIGH, since ultra settings seems to be buggy or game breaking in someway.

    Hi everyone,
I´ve been playing in my 6990M with constant 60 fps, with ocasional drops to 45fps, with OC: 800/1000 (as in my sig)!

Following several threads in the Bethesda, I did some Optimized Settings (see attachments), with improved Shadows and water :D

    Test it out :)
    Best Regards to all

Hey guys. I just upgraded to 6970m. I'm running 10.10. Even on default High setting with AA and AF disable, my FPS drops to about 24 when I'm at the market in Dragonreach.

I feel I should be getting much better results, and looking at Gpu-z I can see that the GPU utilization is around 25%.

My processor lies around 30% usage, so I don't think it is bottlenecking it (esp not at this detail level).

    Any hints/tips?

    EDIT:
I just tried LOW settings and the fps is still under 30 in the town. I was getting better results than this with my 285m :(

I was about to give you some tips, but if you say that even LOW gives u the same framerate, i cant help.

In dragonsreach marketplace my fps drops to 40's as well, althought its only a particle effects fault such smoke and fog. If i turn around my fps goes up to 60fps again.

Im playing with the settings stated above without ini tweaks beside fov. Basically im at ultra, 2xMsaa, high shadows and object detail to high, since ultra for both settings is bugged in someway.
In alternative i can go with FXAA and disable AA while having same framerate.

    Hi,
    ive tested your configs.
Unfortunately i dont see 60fps anywhere, mostly is my gpu fault, althought its similar to a gtx580m, but cant OC that well :)
My clocks are 680/1600. Ive tried only the Ultra ini, the game looks stunning, but in situations with fog or smoke it drops to 45fps, which doesnt seem smooth to me.
    Anyway thanks :D
