How could this possibly be faster than an Alienware M18x?

This notebook is a disappointment. Still uses x7200 era cooling therefore the cpu and gpu run very hot and loud at stock clocks. In addition the cpu lags behind a 3920xm at times and only beats it in limited multithreaded situations. But it can't be overclocked (or even reach max boost) due to the heat and on top of that needs 2x psu to power it.

The M18x R2 with its built in overclocking and community unlocked bios and vbios is faster in games, runs cooler and its 3920xm is a true ivy bridge processor. If Clevo had improved the cooling for this system and made it even thicker than the brick it already is and added native overclocking to the bios, it would have been faster in every way but it fails to achieve that.

World's fastest laptop? Only on paper.

Sandy Bridge-E are you kidding me? Are are the laptops using desktop or mobile processors?

Also, he mad because the M18x can use the dGPU only if necessary.

Stock Desktop CPUs as it's predecessor, the x7200.

About the Heat issues: Bullcrap, with properly applied thermal paste both components run cool. My 680m went up to 67C at its Ghz (1006/2250) run.
The CPU maxes at 78C, so there IS room for overclocking the cpu too.

But yes of course it is quite loud :) You wouldn't buy a Ferrari and expect it to be quiet.

Well this is something to have in consideration:

The test model was a prototype, so not quite final.
The processor is an engineering sample.
The Turbo Boost function was sometimes enabled incorrectly, but could be resolved by rebooting.
The integrated solid state drives could not make use of the RAID mode since a corresponding driver was missing.

I´ll have one of these laptops to test, a final version with a final version cpu and maybe a proper pasting. I´ll try to add something to this thread soon.

X79 desktop CPUs are sandy, X79 has not received an ivy refresh, expect that in Q3 next year perhaps.

Both the 3930K and 3960X are Sandy Bridge hexacores. The "3" is just cosmetic + marketing I guess.

Only in highly threaded tasks though, which is why this is more of a workstation machine in my eyes. You will be able to clock the mobile cores higher.

So is there any actual demand for this model? Strikes me it's worth waiting for the actual IVY-E but then you might as well wait for a Quad Haswell - probably be close to as powerful and you might have a little bit of battery life. I guess it depends on how long it takes for Clevo to revise the P370 for the new socket.

It depends how you define fastest, with an 8 core xeon chip in it with a quadro graphics card it can probably be one of the fastest mobile workstations for sure.

Not sure, It's been a while.

And there are some older machines kicking around that do better in some categories while others do worse. It's a give and take. No one machine is going to take all at the end of the day...

That's a big 10/4 negative Meaker. It only takes the crown in any program/app/benchmark or game using 5 or more cores and under 4.2 ghz in speed. And since Ivy and Sandy can run 4.5 ghz and higher in the M18X, it's list of wins is very very small. And in the desktop world, the x58 series is still faster. And the X58 is outdated, but the boards allow the cpus to run higher. Even though X79 is more efficient. In the mobile world it's losing as well, but the minute things start using more cores, it will of course take over. Thats a given, it's just not today though. But from a standard users point of view, it's faster.

At least from my testing and observations.

    Side note:
But who knows, Clevo might accidently forget and leave some play room with the bios. If that happens, then things will change for sure. :D

Who overclocks a workstation providing mission critical results? Also many workstation programs are highly threaded and thats the point, an 8 core 16 thread mobile xeon fits a very specific niche.

And at 2.4 and 4300 dollar price tag will keep it in a league all of it's own.
And this guy actually ran some test with it in single and in quad cpu mode. But again...anything below 4 cores and it just gets kicked all over the place. Still a very big part of the world operates on speed verses cores...
    Xeon E7 4830 @ HWBOT

    Your talking about 2 things.
Workstation or mobile crown. It cant have both.
And it's not that much faster. Maybe you save 5 minutes and that's about it.(Was not talking about a 4300 dollar Xeon either)
Most people buy desktops for that. Not a whole lot of company's spending 5k to 10k on laptops for this. And since your in the same business as me, you already know this.
Oh yeah, and most business people running a workstation laptop "are not" over clocking anything, so that makes it slower.

Edited: To add the Xeon stuff.

This is the worlds fastest notebook at being a mobile workstation, as I have repeated many times most workstation tasks tend to be highly multi-threaded and that's where this machine will shine, if your work involves less threads then this is not the machine for you.

No need to get frustrated or angry, just move on if it's not.

Now if IVY-E turns out to clock well and has an 8 core consumer version, combined with the full 16x on each GPU you might see that change but that is some way off.
