I will periodically update this thread as I play with my np8660. Obviously I will comment on the build quality and whatnot, but my question for you is what else do you want to know/how do I tell if I have a dud? I will use any *free* program that is reputable that someone will post a link to on this thread along with basic instructions.
np8660 per xoticpc.com
-Windows Vista Home Premium 64
-200GB 7200RPM
-2,048MB DDR3 1066MHz
-512MB PCI-Express nVidia GeForce 9800M GT
-Intel® P8400 2.26ghz "Montevina"
-15.4" WSXGA+ "Glare Type"
First Impression: Very well built, shiny yet not flashy. I began by installing my personal essentials. This included steam ( www.steampowered.com), the first five discs of WoW, iTunes, and about 22gb of music and old files. All of this was complete in about an hour and fifteen minutes. I recorded temps with hwmonitor in degrees Celsius.
note: I opened hardware monitor about halfway into my install.
Processor: min: 36 max:48
Gpu: min: 54 max:60
HDD: min: 60 max:64
Gaming test:
GPU temps:
-About 1 hour of css: Max temp= 66
Benchmarks:
Windows score: 5 - Limited by ram at 5 and cpu was next at 5.2
CSS Test: Avg. of 198 fps
The little things I'm noticing:
-tapping the touchpad functions as a mouse click
-scroll pad on the side of touchpad useful for scrolling in firefox but not much else.
-fingerprint reader is neat/useful beyond belief
Here are my temps after about 3 hours of wow at full settings:

Here's hoping that everything goes well.

I wish I had an NP8660 instead of my dead X205. drool.

Just do some basic benchmarks, go read one of the recent NBR reviews... like for HP dv5t that Chaz wrote.

Dude, screw work, today is a day just to think about you... haha na, jk.
Anyways, I think their has to be someone, an adult atleast 21, there to accept the package.
-
Yea there does most big packages need a adult signature
Off subject but had to tell someone:
I know because I checked my E-mail today and my order for my NP 9262 SLI Q9650 is coming home Friday!yipeeee!
It can't come fast enough.
Congrats on tour new toy. -
about signing for the package...so if your under 18 you cant sign for it??
this is really going to suck if its true
also i have signed for other packages but they were not like a laptop
uh oh...does that mean i have to wait longer? -

the incubus I just noticed we both have the same settings for the NP8660, please tell me all the performance score when you get back. Very much appreciated.
-
Windows score is a 5.
where can i get the free trial of 3dmark? -

I guess you can change your sig from Preordered to Received now.

Also this one is very popular for benchmarking

I'll get those later, probably the first benchmarking tool I'll get will be the source test in CSS. I'll post results when I get them

Thank you

Can anyone comment on my temps (check my first post)
-
isn't that GPU temp in your bioshock run a bit high?? can someone comment
-
The GPU temps look fine to me; sort of depends how long it was at 80+. I think that's on the low side for that card, however.
The HDD temps are the only thing that stands out; 73C is high, higher than is safe for hard drives, but the current temps all seem fine and if it's just a few seconds that it got that high, it's fine. I'd need more data on how long. 62C idling for the HD is also high; but well, it's a 7200rpm drive in a laptop, which is usually a bad idea. -
Tarentum, you're looking at the wrong temps for HDD. They're at the bottom in those images. You're looking at ACPI.
His HDD temps look better than most of those reported (by other NP8660 owners), actually. -
Gpu temps seem fine for that 15" chassis running that game. As long as it does not go over 95 you should be ok. Your CPU temps on load are perfect, and your Hard drive temp is better than most. HD temp should be between 55-62 on load. The ACPI is the overall temp inside the the laptop i think and 75 seems resonable. Overall your temps seem to be fine.
-
yeah dont look at those temps for idle, sometimes i started the readings mid activity. My idle temps are much cooler.

Theincubus what os do you use? I have the same set up as you and my HDD palm resting area get really hot. I wonder if I didn't format the drive correctly or something.
-
im using windows vista 64 bit. my right palmrest gets warm, but not nearly hot enough to be uncomfortable.
-
If 52C ISN'T at idling (after having cooled down/just after boot, etc - that's what I think of as idling (20m+ of very light activity, no HDD access) then it's a good temperature. It sort of seems to me that hard drive size+brand+#platters is making a large difference in heat.
