Thermal pads on the 9800M GTU in the M860TU?

    Hi All,

So I recently had to bake my 9800M GT due to total hardware failure. To my amazement, it worked, but now I had idle temperatures of 60-70 celsius and gaming temperatures of 90+ (!). Out of fear for my graphics card I have been running windows with Aero turned off for the last few days. Today, I finally sat down, and after taking the entire thing apart and reapplying the thermal paste, I have found the problem.

Apparently, being the doofus that I am, I did not recognize that my 9800M gt actually had some thermal pads on the actual processsor for the 9800 GT itself. On the attached picture, I have highlighted in red the areas on which Sager applied a small black thermal pad to the 9800M GPU. It had apparently gotten melted during baking, and was now performing the opposite function to its intended task. So, I ripped it off.

My temperatures are now NORMAL. Idling at 45, gaming at 70 max. However, I worry that in ripping off that thermal pad without thinking, I may have caused more problems for myself down the road. What was this pad (it doesn't look like the rest of the thermal pads in my M860tu, which look almost like blu-tack, but instead was a plain black, and looked like it belonged on the processor.

What was this pad, and should I order a new one to replace the one I just disposed of? If so, where can I get this thermal pad? Thanks all!

EDIT: To clarify, I realized that this pad was probably important, so I applied AC5 to the areas highlighted in blue. In essence, whereas I previously only applied AC5 to the center metal part, I also applied it to the now exposed metal rim around the edge also.

Nobody knows? :(. I even tried calling Sager (the distributor of my M860TU) and the tech there said he wasn't sure. The best advice they could give me was to go to my local computer store and ask for "thermal pads." However, I don't really trust my local computer store (I've known them to try and foist off overpriced products onto people), so I thought I'd ask here:

What thermal pads do you guys recommend for replacing thermal pads in the 9800M GT? This is for the VRAM chips btw, not for the actual processor.
