Thinking to buy Clevo P955ER, any thoughts?

Hello everyone, I am currently looking for a laptop for school and gaming at the same time. The Things that I care about is

1. Preferably to have minimum of 5 hours of battery life - 50% brightness, low keyboard backlight, only using the internet -
2. Light enough to carry around
3. Able to push OverWatch with consistent 144hz while streaming - FHD, lowest setting, G-sync-. My current GTX 1060 laptop is not able to deliver this due to thermal throttling.
4. Easy accessibility for upgrades
5. I can only spend $1400 ~ $1500 USD

These are the things that I care about, and while I was looking for Aero 15X, I found Clevo P955ER, which is $700 USD cheaper. Does Clevo P955ER match my requirements?

What notebook do you have currently?

Forget the battery life on the P955ER, 5 hours are unrealistic. Also thermal throttle will also occur on the P955ER.

 

5 hours at idle/reading word etc is achievable, but that's not how people really use laptops of course - if you need something with 5h+ real world usage then tbh you should look at other options. PCMark Work Test will see just over 2.5h - you should expect 3.5 - 5h general usage on Wifi.

 

I am currently using Aero15W, but for some reason, when I play Overwatch, the frame drops significantly after I play the game for a while. I first thought it's a thermal throttling, however, I already re-pasted the thermal, so I don't know what's going on.

The P950ER is sort of an "experiment", it has its flaws atm, but im sure it will get better.

It has following issues:

1. fan control/throttling (will be fixed soon enough)
2. GPU/CPU throttling (will never be "fixed", but im sure it will get finetuned in a couple of months, its not really that noticable unless you powerbench or powergame to crunch out those 3-4 extra FPS out of some GPU-eating game. I personally really dont care if i get 52 or 47 FPS in *insert heavyduty gametitle here*

3. It turns off sometimes on battery without warning, dont know why. Its Clevo-related, meaning it happens no matter what 3rd party vendor you buy it from. I hope this issue gets fixed very soon, its a deal-breaker.

Other than that the advantages is:

1. Its very comfortable, thin and light
2. Its very fast and quiet when surfing / doing usual stuff / watching some movies etc where it mainly uses the Intel-GPU for processing / normal tasks, even with the included Control Center 2.0 the fans behave pretty good. It can easily show 8K at 60fps

3. Its fast (imo) for video-editing, which is a good indicator for fast gaming, nothing is more heavy than intense video-editing in e.g. Premiere Pro. I have game-pc's that play games fast but are still slow in Premiere Pro, this machine is fast in Premiere Pro.

4. The led light and its control on the keyboard doesnt really consume that much, since it has a sleep/shut off timer, so when not using the keyboard you can set it to dim off the LED lights after x amount of seconds.

5. The screen (I have the 4K UHD version) is well calibrated and has no noticable PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) which some of the never laptop-displays have that can be extremely disturbing and give headaches after just minutes for people sensitive to flickering (myself included). I had to return a similar machine from MSI because of its low-hz PWM.
Its a joke having e.g. a 120hz screen if watching 30/60fps videos on it flickers like an old 25hz CRT.

All in all a good machine imo.

 

Can you please send me a link or more information about the turning off on battery without warning - I am not familiar with this problem.

Throttling mentioned in your points 1. and 2. are complicated. There are two factors:

1/ CCC software was limiting performance in certain applications by throttling, this was primarily in stress tests where stability is more important than clock speeds - however this also affected other applications which are demanding and thus need the full performance. A new version of CCC software was included in a P955ER (SCHENKER Key 15) which we sent back to notebookcheck.

2. GPU/CPU throttling - this is also directly related to the old version of CCC software. BUT, the system will still throttle performance once it hits thermal or power limits - like most other models do. The only question really is if people feel that this chassis is limited more by it's thin design compared to similar chassis from other manufacturers or non-MAX-Q which don't aren't limited to 21mm thickness.

 

1.) Nope, we clevo users are waiting for a proper fan control since roughly 7 years, it won't happen as long we don't get a proper program. a paid programm will be released soon...ish by Obsidian. Which isn't something u'll get for free.
2.) yeah prema will make the most out of the system
3.) I was under the impression this only happens on Linux, does this happen for you on windows as well?

3.) Video editing has absolutely nothing to do with gaming. Also it's rather slow compared to even against other 8750Hs (MSI GT 75 for instance) since the CPU is throttling hard, sadly Video editing is mostly IPC so the thin and light even gets its ass handed to I7 CPus from other notebook in this regard.
