Like the topic says I would like to know if their is any way I could connect 3 external monitors directly to my P170em (any special config I need to make in bios etc etc) I have only been able to do so using a usb3.0 to hdmi but I am having problems with the nvidia drivers...
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately not, can only do two simultaneous displays with the built in hardware due to the limitation on the HD4000 iGPU that the dGPU is routed through to allow optimus.

That's an interesting question. I have an AMD card with display port. What's when I'm using the display port, can I use then more than two displays simultaneously?

That display port is still routed through the iGPU hardware wise from what I understand and limits you to the same two simultaneous displays.

the only workaround I know of is to use something like the Matrox Dual Head or triple head to go USB units. however do not expect any gaming performance to screens attached to the USB unit. ( and disable the Nvidia dGPUin some cases ).

Thre problem with the matrox is that the hd4000 is limited in terms of max resolution so I wouldn't be able to get the 3x1920. In terms of usb output I just returned the usb adapter (displaylink usb 3.0) due to problems with the nvidia optimus where some games like LoL and skyrim wouldn't even boot until I uninstalled the drivers (unplugging the usb wasn't enough).

Now I am testing a 2560x1080 monitor and a normal 1920x1080 monitor BUT now I am not able to turn the internal monitor on. I would swear I was able to do so with two normal monitors, does it count has two monitors due to the high resolution (it is connected using displayport has it would need a dual-dvi)?

yes, the 2560 will count as a twin display normally or dual DVI, my 4K editing screen counts as 4.

downside is intel IGP is rather limited in resolutions, screens and color depth and that lack comes into play with Optimus graphics switching which adds another level of annoyance to multiple screens.

I thought a hd 4000 couldn't even drive a 4k monitor isn't the max res of the dp is 2560x1600?

it cant, sorry for the confusion. that is why all my editing stations only have a Quadro or FirePro as intels and gforce cards cant do 10 bit color either.

At least Haswell iGPU is said to support up to 4k by 2k.
