EDIT: I believe it is a USB C to Displayport cable, but has Thunderbolt 3 compatibility. This is the cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J6DT070/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have an ASUS VG248QE 24" monitor that I'm trying to run at the full 144hz refresh from the P870KM1 in my signature. The monitor works just fine using an HDMI cable, but the refresh rate is obviously capped at 60hz. I bought a USB C to Displayport cable because I thought that it would allow me to run at the full 144hz refresh, but it isn't working. Windows 10 makes the 'you've just plugged a USB cable into me' sound, and the monitor sees the Displayport cable get plugged in, but says there's no video input.
I also bought a mini Displayport to Displayport cable that runs the monitor just fine at 1920x1080 @ 144hz.
Google search doesn't turn up much of anything. Could someone tell me what I'm missing? Is running the monitor with the USB C to Displayport cable even feasible? I was hoping to use those ports for something, and I already have the cable. The two ports on the laptop have the thunderbolt above them, so maybe I needed a Thunderbolt 3 to Displayport cable?
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Use a good mini DP to DP cable. It can do full res/refresh.

Thanks for the reply Meaker. I did get a mini DP to DP cable, but I was hoping to use one of those fancy Thunderbolt 3 ports for something. I swear I read somewhere that Thunderbolt 3 could run external monitors.

It can run external monitors if the computer supports displayport alternate mode.

You would have to divert the displayport signal to the thunderbolt port and use a proper hub with an output.

Thank you both for the information. I will check into the DP alternate mode on the P870KM-1.
