    hey guys,
well my macbook just gave out and i need somewhat of a portable system with a decent kick to it with a decent price... from what i have seen i was looking at the Compal JHL90 (Sager NP2096) barebone... it has the montevina system in it so i can upgrade the cpu to a faster speed if i need it later but for now i have an extra T8300 laying around so im gonna put that in there... on to the questions:

is it a good idea to start wth a barebone (since i have a tight budget) and addon as i go on?

is it better for me to build it or to have a company build it?

how is the screen on the JHL90 compared to a mac?

    how portable is the system?

how many hours of battery would i get?

how heavy the system is i see 6.5 with battery pack some places and others i see just 6.8lb so how heavy is it?

has anyone built a whitebook before how hard is it and for someone who has built computers would it be hard?

well any other info you can give me would be great :D ... thanks alot everyone

firstly your T8300 won't work on NP2096, and secondly I recommend you to buy the whole thing together. based on the question you asked, I am a bit concern your capability.

well as i have said in many other threads the T8300 is compatible with the JHL90 it is a slower cpu to use with it but i will upgrade it more once i get the money... whole thing together is an extra atleast $400-500 which is why i was asking as for my skill i thin i am somewhat capable (if you see in the AW forum i replaced my T8300 with an X9000) of making it just wanted to konw ppls opinions on the topic.

heres the proof about the processor:

    http://www.compal.com/Product/Html/notebook/JHL90.htm

look in the Chipset section it says:

"800 MHz and 1066MHz FSB support"

and the T8300 is the same size as in 45nm as the new cpus it just has a lower FSB

well im not calling you a liar or anything im just saying from my research (and i showed you my research part of it) i saw that it is compatible i know i wont be reaping the full benefitsof the system but i can always do that later... if you think i am wrong please show me some proof im not trying to be a jerk towards you its just that you saying it wont work when the company that makes it says it does... who would you side with?

Umm you obviously have not done your research. The company that made did not tell you directly that it will work, you are under the assumption that it will work because of what you see. IF you actually looked at the link you provided it says CHIPSET -Intel Cantiga PM45 + ICH9-M. If you had done your research you have known that CANTIGA is the MONTEVINA PLATFORM. If it supported the T8300 it would also ave said supported CRESTLINE which is the SANTA ROSA platform which is what the t8300 belongs to. Also your looking at the 800 in the chipset, which means that the 1000fsb can be lowered to that, but if you look at the CPU it only stats 1066 cause that is the only thing it supports. The chipset always lists the default FSB and the one under it. Go look at the older models, it will show the original 800FSB and 667 FSB does not mean it will support a 667 fsb chip. Also just because it has 45NM does not mean that every 45NM chip will fit, the new Nehalem chip coming out will use the 45NM structure but you wont be able to put that into a montevina platform.

T8300 processor is Intel Santa Rosa model. It is previous version of intel processor.

I recommend you to buy a complete system, if you do not know the difference in cpu.

    Good Luck!

If you bought a barebone, you would save money, but if you screw up you don't have a warranty or technical support. Unless you seriously believe that you can build the laptop from the barebone perfectly, look into pre-builts.

    Also, it's 6.5lbs with battery.
