lately while gaming, my laptop will randomly shut off. it won't even bsod. it will freeze/hang for a couple seconds then turn itself off. i'm aware that it may do that because of fan/heat concerns but i repasted my gpu and cpu twice recently. i've also tried downgrading drivers and temps seem to be fine. crashing happens randomly and some games crash more than others.

i also ran a few memtest instances and after 10mins or so one popped up with eventually two errors and said to read Q#2 on the faq.

what i'd like to know is how would i be able to go about seeing if the gpu fan functions or not? how would i be able to underclock/volt my 7970m? the memtest faq said proper ram would give 0 errors, even with the test running for days and that even one error can be substantial. so would getting new ram help fix my issue?

i also tried using Whocrashed but it came up empty as my system just shuts off and does not bsod. i'm using a one year old P150EM, i7-3630qm, 8gb ram, win7 x64, intel4000 hd integrated.

    thanks

Have you tried changing the RAM module to another slot? Maybe you could also try and ask a friend to lend you a module to test (removing yours from the system). It does sound like your RAM (or slot) may be faulty!

    Cheers,

Could be a system voltage problem, in which case the board (or card, possibly) would need serviced. Does this shutdown occur on either battery or AC power?

    well. problem solved.

HWinfo64 showed that my dGPU was hitting 90+c within minutes and the fan at 100%. the issue was my repasting job. i previously used the 'dot' method with my arctic silver 5 and i guess it wasn't covering 100%. this time i used the 'spread' method and, voila. the temps are now maxing out in their 60s with the fan at 30-40%. i can game hours on end worry free!

    jeez  :p

    thanks, guys!

Glad you got it solved :) . I think the arctic silver 5 recommended application method is "line". Though I doubt that affects much. Great temps btw ;)
