Hello guys, if you remember my previous post:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/683161-applying-new-thermal-paste-7970m.html
I have some new crazy updates!
First, the quality of thermal paste they put on is **** ! It was crusty and dry... Look:![]()
I applied Arctic Silver 5! AND WOW! the change is amazing!

Havent seen it go past 50C!
Its time you do it yourself! Its super simple!

Wow that is amazing lol
nice dude

Prostar Computer Company Representative
Thank you for the update. Did you try IC thermal Compound?
-
Thats a pretty bad TIM application. If they had used less from the factory your temps wouldn't have seen such a drastic change. I have the stock TIM still but temps are decent. I have a gtx680 on the way though so i'll replace the cpu and gpu with some Shin-Etsu G751 I have laying around. I don't expect to see much better results but may as well do it since i'm cracking it open anyways.
-
No, i ordered Arctic M4 Extreme, but i guess it was only CPU. (thought it was both)
My CPU Idles at ~27, which is pretty damn good. (3820QM)
Guessing it was just a stock thermal pad. It was amazing feeling to remove it, since it was utter .
Very happy with the result though. -
You live at somewhere cold? Because most of us are having a CPU idle temp of 40C~50C across 3610QM/3720QM/3740QM/3820QM/3840QM
-
yeah 27c seems a little too low, even with fans at full blast you should struggle getting 27c on idle.
-
Any advice on putting the thermal paste? So I dont spoil it
-
Unless you're sitting in the fridge. Now that's commitment to cooling.
Look at this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...wn.html?highlight=thermal+paste+picture+guidedmanti likes this. -
Honestly no not really. I live in Holland, and right now its summer. It hit 31-33C. Tomorrow 34... Just took a screen shot IDLE at 25C~C Not sure why its so cold, but i like it

I can't see how it could be cooler than the ambient temperature. The cooling system can't do that. I suspect there may be something odd about your temperature monitoring. Have you tried any other programs?
-
Honestly its super simple.
Remove back cover
(4 screws i believe)
Then remove the 4 screws for the GPU.
You can determine which one is which by looking at the MOBO.
GPU is a chip, and CPU is embedded in the MOBO.
After that remove the 4 GPU screws
(The radiator isnt attached to anything)
Also i used a flat-headed screw driver to carefully remove the heatsink.
Cleaned it off, first using paper.. Used acetone to clean up everything
WHEN USING ACETONE BE CAREFUL! IT WILL RUIN YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO USE IT!
Apply a small drop of thermal paste on the GPU.
Apply heatsink
And MAGIC!
Wrote this down using my head.. If i forgot something then tell me
-
Give me a program and i will try it
-
Try CPUID HWmonitor. I'v found that to be pretty good.
-
How tragic... IDLE 40C~
Strange, since i know the GPU Temp is correct.. (Checked) -
Seems strange it would have read the temps wrong. 40-45 would be normal though.
-
CPU is not embedded by the way, it's a chip that's removable like the whole GPU card, however the GPU chip is embedded onto the GPU board.
And yes it seems like the temp monitoring with Speedfan is off, 40C sounds about correct.
It's best if you use multiple programs to monitor: HWINFO64/GPU-Z/MSI-Afterburner, this way you don't get fault reports easily. -
Please don't take it the wrong way, but we're becoming way too obsessed with temperatures. In my opinion, if everything is OK and doesn't reach dangerous temps, then there's no point to keep messing with it.
Remember, that laptop should serve us, not the other way around
-
Some programs have a different Tmax programmed in and hence give a temperature that's offset by 10-20 deg C lower than it actually is.
-
loads of monitoring programs in my signature below for everyone else to try.
-
actually... is the 50°C the intel gpu (hd4000 is shown in your infos)? can't quite believe the 7970m stays below 50°C under load only due to a repaste job ... (that would mean a 40°C difference for me...)
-
Awhh Hackness
i know, i was just trying to explain the best way possible
Sorry, should have put more effort in explaining. I was almost 100% sure i was going to get critic for that explanation haha...
-
Wait here a second..
FIRST: I enjoy playing around with computers its my only hobby.
SECONDLY: If i can improve performance, and enjoy doing it at the same time, why not?
And if there is room for improvement, then why the hell not?
-
Nope its defiantly the 7970m
HD4000 Would be burning running Rage, also if i remember right Rage.exe is automatically added in the drivers
-
With the temps you're getting, I don't think it's needed at that point, but if you like doing that, then of course who am I to judge? Ignore me and have fun, whatever makes you happy, man
-
well i changed the paste at my w170hrm and i didnt get any difrence cpu is getting FRY at 98 stable while in game
-
Make sure you do it correctly, and use good thermal paste.
-
Make sure you use something better than Mayonnaise

Awesome thread though. I almost thought I was on the History or Discovery channel about the paranormal or unsolved mysteries. -
The reason I said originally posted by mite_jan was because I linked that picture from his online albums
.
Trust me, if you have stock thermal paste change it! (34C difference) P150EM/7970M
