I think a good way to keep the np8662's harddrive cool would be turning it off when its not in use. The turn off after X minutes of inactivity power option doesn't work, because the hard drive is usually in use. Is there a way to configure Vista so that the harddrive is only used when I need it, and turned off otherwise.

You could try turning drive indexing off.

What kind of temps are you reaching, and which HDD do you have?

i've done that, as well as defragmenting, and superfetch
    right now its 56 C
its more of an annoyance than a problem.
    i have the hitachi 7200RPM 320GB drive

So is 56C the max, or the average? My HDD tops out at 55C. These new Seagates are cool customers.

i know, the laptop definetely gets cooler when room temp is cooler
    but thats a different solution.

I also have the Hitachi drive and it is warm. But I have no air conditioning in the apartment and in the last few weeks, the temperature in the room was reaching above 30C :O
At that point, my HDD temp after transferring a lot of files for a very long time topped out at about 59-60C. Considering the environment in which it is being used, I consider it to be quite cool. I dont think you really need to worry about the temps until it goes above 65C, Im not an expert but I did more than my share of reading about this as I was concerned.
So dont worry about it, just enjoy your lappy :)

im not worried about the hdd crashing. the laptop just isn't comfortable to use when the right palmrest gets hot. besides a 1600+ laptop shouldn't have such problems.

you will feel hotness in palm rest when HD temp. reach 45C and its not acceptable.

yes intel matrix will decrease HD temp. by 3 degrees, and inturn will decrease palm rest temp.

its normal during gaming to hot up but it also depend on your room temp.

my room temp. now in summer about 28C and my HD temp. during net surf is 42C.

Intel Matrix Storage updates the SATA controller driver and provides support for software RAID.

it just runs in the background and should lower your temp. by 3-4c

    download it from HERE

So basically the touchpad area and palm rest will still be hot, that sort of defeats the purpose of SSD.
Blazing read and right speed's aside they are not to attractive for the money they are going for..."sigh"

It's new technology. Remember back when USB flash memory was like $40 for 1GB, which was considered massive? Now 16gigs sell for less than $15 in many places, less than $1 for the same size drive.

Yes an SSD will run cooler!

An SSD generates no heat aside from the (smaller amount) of voltage it consumes.

A mechanical HDD consumes more electricity (more heat) and generates more heat from it's motor drive that spins the platters.

I read around here that some SSDs are actually hotter. In a conventional HDD the only part that generates heat is the motor, while in the SSD every single chip is generating heat.

Yeah, I was reading into that a bit the other day.

    Bottom line is that:
some SSDs use more peak power then some HDDs do so are hotter during peak use.
some SSDs use more average power over time then some HDDs do (particularly those with multiple controllers I understand)
some SSDs use more idle power then some HDDs do so are hotter when not in use.
some SSDs blow all HDDs out of the water when it comes to power/heat/battery.
So if you are concerned about heat/power/battery it pays to research a bit.

i found this post on how to see what is using the hdd

Re: Vista -Loads of Hard Drive Activity
    Vista Tip:
Right-click the task bar, click Task Manager
Switch to the Performance tab, click Resource Monitor (UAC prompt as this is an admin task)
    (Close Task Manager)
In Resource Monitor, expand the Disk section

Here you can see the most recently accessed files, which process instigated the I/O, the process' I/O priority, the response time, bytes/min read and written.
Very handy when looking at performance issues without needing to fire up PerfMon.

I would like to turn everything that I won't need off. how to start?

Mini hijack: is it normal for my hdd to have a max of 56C playing crysis for an hour and go 61C+ when defragmenting or even just extracting/installing programs??

Intel matrix storage drivers are installed and it stabilizes at 52C, even when the beginning temp is 32C.
