I plan on buying a small computer as a present for someone; they aren't much of a power user—just some gaming. Since it won't be very heavy gaming, the GT 650m should suffice, and a dual core i5 is more than enough. The only problem I foresee is the short battery life, hence I was wondering if it were possible to replace the i5 dual core with a ULV i7? I believe my biggest concern is that the battery life will not improve as well as I hope.

    Thank you in advance.

ULV chips are all bga soldered iirc. With an unlocked bios you may be able to tdp restrict the chip however getting the same result.

Shame that they are all BGA, but I suppose it is easier and more streamlined than PGA. Oh well. I think I can manage by under volting, like you suggested. That combined with Optimus should increase battery life—theoretically, at the very least.

If they don't game find an Alienware M11X R3 on fleabay. That would be your best bet for battery life and mild gaming. You lose a lot with the video card but it sounds like battery life is more important.
