In the process of moving to Windows 8 on my P170HM and am having issues getting USB 3.0 to behave normally. Found a handful of threads across the internet indicating that some of the NEC/Renesas controllers need a firmware and driver update to be completely happy.

Tracked down the firmware here ( RENESAS/NEC Drivers & Firmwares). However I have no idea which of the two chips the P170HM has - uPD720200 or the uPD720200a.

Is there anyone who's updated the USB 3.0 controller firmware on a P170HM who can clarify which firmware they installed? Also, have you noticed any issues following the upgrade?

the P170HM has the same Renesas chipset like the P150HM. I upgraded mine to 3.0.3.4 (uPD720200) and im using the USB3 drivers that win8 update provided. runs like a charm :)

when trying to install the 4.0.2.0 firmware for uPD720200a ull get an install error.

    cheers

I Installed the uPD720200a 4020 Firmware on my P150HM successfully, even the Rensas USB monitor program reports firmware as 4020. I bought my P150HM a month before EM series was released, maybe they updated the USB3 chip in later models of the HM series.

I installed the 4.0.1.5.0.2 firmware a few month's ago and yesterday I installed the 4020 after reading this thread, no warnings at all during update. Once the update was finished, it asked me to reboot. No workarounds.

Thats correct there was a USB3 chip change on later revision motherboards, to the a model. No real feature differences just a later revision.

Only difference is the "a" version has lower power consumption, the P170HM3 also uses it...

Im not even using any USB 3.0 ports. Just the 2.0 port, connecting to an USB 2.0 HUB.
All in all, Ive got only 2 cables connected to the laptop...the HUB and the power cord.
    Nice and clean...

    Thanks for the driver links.

I had a power issue (couldn't power the GPU) on my motherboard when my 8170 was almost 1 year old and the motherboard was replaced so I'm not sure which USB3 chip I have. The USB3 continued to work until recently when I bought a SSD drive and reinstalled with the drivers from the Sager page (the drivers were probably changed when the MB was changed). Since then I'll get USB for about an hour then it will disappear for days even though USB2 works fine. I've tried updated drivers from Renesas but not the firmware or the 'a' drivers. I'll give that a go next. Many thanks for the ideas.I was totally stumped till now.

    It works... at last!

Thanks for the info about the updated chipset in new motherboards. I was doggedly trying to use the drivers for the older chipset that I got from the sager website. Ends up that I should have been using the uPD720201 drivers instead.

Sager really should put those drivers on their website support along with the older ones. I know I have a replacement motherboard but surely there are others who will trip up with the wrong drivers sooner or later.
