I bought new external hard drive (Seagate 1tb GoFlex with usb 3.0). I installed the drivers that came with my laptop that had something to do with usb 3.0. However, when I plug it in the 3.0 ports the drive's lights turn on as if it were connected but it won't show up as connected. If I plug it into the usb 2.0 it works perfectly. I've already tested the hard drive and it is functioning properly. Any help on this?

There is a USB 3.0 driver inside the driver DVD Sager provided. Did you install that driver?

I did, but it still won't work. The first time I plugged it in the 3.0 it didnt work, then I tried the 2.0 and afterwards it worked once in the 3.0 but now it won't work.

Try the latest driver from the Clevo drivers link in my signature, if it's still not working try disabling power management from the 3.0 host controller utility or updating the firmware for it: Here

I have the firmware update and the latest driver, my 3.0 ports work great since.

Just to note it also depends on the RPM of the hard drive within the external hard driver... If its of a low rpm (such as 5400 as most externals are) it won't be able to achieve the speed of 3.0 USB.

Thats a throughput issue, the issue badaboom21 is having is entirely the controller shutting off the port, it was a very common issue people had before the last driver updates, before that people were having to turn off power management on the controller to keep it on, it also wasn't limited to 3.0 devices either and would turn off with any usb device connected to the 3.0 ports.

Also the RPM of the drive is not going to be that big of factor here, you can already bottleneck a 5400rpm drive on usb 2.0, you'll still see a significant speed increase on 3.0 using a 3.0 capable external, remember that the higher rpm speeds up the seeking on the drive and only minimally correlates to raw data transfer speeds because of that, IE a more fragmented file will move slower because the seek is taking longer on a lower rpm drive.
