What is the general opinion on those, I'm looking for something small that I can easily carry in a bag.
If the difference between an USB and the integrated sound card are barely noticeable I rather just get a real external sound card.
This is for a P150em
Thanks

The only reason to get one is if you intend to use it for an actual external 5.1 surround sound system and not the fake version through the headphone port.
I love my X-fi Sound Blaster and picked it up for only £30 in the UK and it produces great sound for my logitech system. Also its pretty small and compact.

For home, I use a dual Wolfson WM8741 DAC

you can look at asus xonar u3 its a thumb usb (so very small), and very popular here, read many positive feedback about it and it cost around 60USD. To be honest I did not try it yet but you can search for reviews if you want.

Thanks I'll check those, I'm heading out to FRY's and wanted some intel before buying something.

I got an X-Fi HD Pro USB and sounds great on my 7.1 optical setup, but to be honest I can't tell a difference over optical from the headphone output optical.

Pop onto Amazon mine was from Ebay however which is why it was cheap I love mine looks the dogs as well. What the others have mentioned is true though you can get good quality from a USB dongle it just depends if you want to run a complete external system and not headphones or single port speakers which you can easily do through the built in soundcard on your laptop.
Here is the link but its £46 at the moment on Amazon. -
thanks mate
ive got the original x-fi card and 5.1 extention http://forum.notebookreview.com/accessories/Pics Here
which of course wont work with my new lappy as it hasnt got the card slot anymore. i would like to wire up my 5.1 surround and also my 1000watt a side sound system so i will keep an eye out for a price drop again as im skint at the moment and buying a new bmw in 3 months.
