    Hi,

I've recently decided to install linux on my w860cu, a dual boot where i have a 50 gig windows partition for gaming.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 but am now running Linux Mint 10 as I had video issues on Ubuntu. The problem was not solved by a fresh install of LM.

Now, the problem: In gnome, moving windows around is not smooth. I get horizontal scan lines. I made a screenshot while moving a window quickly from right to left, which illustrates the problem: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13201453/Skjermdump.png
The lines also occur in video playback.

I'm very frustrated by this problem as i really enjoy linux. I've tried several driver including the latest, 173 and 253.
If someone could point me in the direction of a solution so that i may watch my videos the way they were meant to be played, I would be very grateful.

PS: I hope it was alright posting this issue in the SAger forum, if not I appologize,

Edit: My specs are: i7 720, gtx 285m, 4 gb RAM

It's tearing, not scan lines. I can almost guarantee that it's a driver issue.

Thanks you for replyying. I did not know the term for this phenomenon, so thasnk you for pointing it out, perhaps it will be easier to find a solution now,

As i said, I have tried three different drivers (latest, 260, standard ubuntu - 173, and 253)
Iæve also edited the xorg.ong for horizsync. WIll try the 185 drivers today.

Did you try the ubuntu proposed (version current) driver? it should be 260.19.06-Ubuntu
And what about the visual effects option? did you try to disable, half enable and fully enable it to see if problem persists?

    Hi,
I've solved this problem now. :)

I did a search on tearing in linux and found this bug thread:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/151674

I followed some of the suggestions there:
    - Uninstalled nvidia driver
    - blacklisted nouveau driver in /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    - Installed the 260.19.21 drivers
    - In compiz, set the refresh rate to 60 hz, sync to vblank on
    - Nvisia X settings: Sync to Vblank

Thank you for those trying to help me, especially Paralel for pointing out the correct term "tearing" :)
