    Hello,

I am trying to get Ubuntu 9.10 to work smoothly with my NP8662. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find almost any drivers for it. I've searched around and came up empty. I need mainly my sound card and touch pad drivers. Does anyone know where I can download the appropriate drivers?

    Thanks!

Hopefully this thread can be of some help. I'm currently running Karmic on M17X-R1, and had to jump over a few hurdles there.

It should just work. Most sound cards and touchpads should be supported by default.

Unfortunately not every machine is supported out of the box yet.
Had to install backports-alsa or recompile alsa from scratch to get a working sound, video and wireless can installed from the Hardware drivers. The rest should be fine.

to install Ubuntu 9.10 into your NP8662 (Clevo M860TU with Q9000 support) :

1- It's not recommended to partitionate the HDD with a Win7, because you may loose the webcam under Win7 (if you care about this)

2- in System Settings (F2 upon booting), make shure that you choose "Others" as OS. Choosing "WinXP" or "Vista/Win7" will work, but cause some problems sometimes, specially for sounds.

3- Install Ubuntu normally from CD or USB

4- Go to System\Administration\Hardware Drivers and choose nVidia 185 and modem drivers

5- Go to System\Administration\Update Manager and update your Ubuntu

6- Optional : go to http://planet76.com/repositories/ and install the latest deb (actually 2.4.5) then Go to System\Administration\System76 Driver and install the drivers. This will add some specific drivers to your machine, but if you want my openion, really you don't need them the Linux common drivers are enough.

7- To be able to open more video extentions:
    a) Add Medibuntu repository and its GPG key : Applications\Accessories\Terminal then type :
    sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update
    b) You may also wish to add the following packages. The first will cause many apps from the Medibuntu repository to appear in Ubuntu Software Center. The second will allow users to generate crash reports against Medibuntu packages and submit them to the Medibuntu bugtracker :
    sudo apt-get --yes install app-install-data-medibuntu apport-hooks-medibuntu
    c) to play encrypted DVDs :
    sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
    d) to play Windows formats, Real, and Quicktime :
    For Ubuntu amd64 sudo apt-get install w64codecs
    For Ubuntu i386 sudo apt-get install w32codecs

8- If you want to make a wondeful 3D disktop :
Applications\Ubuntu Software Center and install Adcanced Desktop Effects Settings. Google how to use this application because it's too long to be discussed here.
If you don't want something complicated, but though you want to get benifit from the powefull of your NP8662 video card :
System\Preferences\Appearance\Visual Effects and then choose "Extra"

VOILA & Welcome to the Open Source Life :spinny:

Thank you for all the replies. I'll try a fresh install and the above steps to get the drivers when I get my new hard drive. Having some bad sector issues right now. Thanks for all the help!

I reinstalled Ubuntu and everything works fine now.. Thank you all for the help. My grub bootloader works just fine, though I guess I can't test it all the way, considering my windows partition is messed up! Bad sectors on my hard drive I think is the reason why.
