Hi guys Man i love my M860tu and do i have plans for it!.. For its Second Birthday i intend to turn it into this!

WELL not quite.. but i plan to get it paintmached and fully finished in the exact same finish as the lime yelow DSi From Nintendo.

I also plan to do the following when i strip it all down and paint it.

Replace its 7200 RPM 320gig drive with suitable 256gig SSD drive
Replace its P8600 2.4 duel with a duel running at 3.0ghz or higher
Replace its 9800m GT 512mb with a ATi / Nvidia 2010 gfx offering as suported.

Any sugestions for my plans.. any roadblocks you can see happening for me.
Main questions would be is soldermoding my P8600 to 3.0 enugh and should i just do that and not bother installing a new CPU. And what time frame can we expect new M860tu suported GPUs from ATi/Nvidia in 2010. Idealy i would like to take my laptop apart in august 2010 and have it painted and operational by september in time for its 2nd birthday!.

The GPU is the thing thats really holding me back on this rebuild.. Do you guys think 2010 will be the year to swatch out the old 9800m GT or should i wait.... i guess Starcraft2 // Cataclysm // Diablo3 specs will be big factors!.

Looking forward to documenting this project and sharing it with you

(i will also atempt a battery mod/expantion if any one can guide me in the right direction.. im not scared to get rid of my DVD drive ^+^)

LONG LIVE THE LIME LEMON M860tu!

    First two are currently do-able.

Option 1 costs about $400 from Dell.
Dell part no. Dell part# 341-9999 - $479, less if you have E&A discount.

Option 2 costs $340 from HP
    http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/S...eria=570434-001&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

Dunno about option 3 - but it at least will cost $400 imo; in total the cost will most likely exceed $1100. Better off selling this M860TU, and opting for a i7 W860CU.

Your MXM 2.1 slot limits you to a GTX 280M.

    Option 1
i dont know where you live but in perth australia i can get a 256 SSD for $767.80
    PQI PQI 256GB S525 2.5"
.. or even less if i import from HK/TW/MLChina

    Option 2
Can cost 0 if i solder mod my P8600 2.4 duel to run at 333 at 3.0 speed

    Option 3
The 2010 mobile GPU releases will use MXM 2.1 slot re ATi / Nvidia sistems design booklets from CES 09

Suprized at response only perspective buyers here any FFLaunch M860tu still creeping around?

My main questions be towards Option 1? and Option 3? .... If i can solder mod CPU and get it to 3.0 thats great costs no money...

however if i can get new Duel and clock stable at say 3.3 or 3.6 i be happyer with that. Any old M860tu having good resolts with Core 2 Due clocks .. or is the 3.0 mark the limit and i should just stick with cheap and easy solder mod.

Also any updates from 2010 Ati Nvidia.. all i have is booklet that seems old.

    PS.
M860CU is bad laptop have u seen it in your hands.. i wish not to hold look or even mention that disgusting leather clad monster so please reframe from telling me to GTFO and just spend money on newest CLEVO lab monstrosity.

    PPS.
Cheapest M860CU i can get is $3,175.00 AUS... i can upgrade my M860tu for mabye no more than 1,000 AUS..

Pluss i want custom painjob on a nice chassis not a ugly noisey 2inch one.

so please no more mention of M860cu mess this is M860tu upgarde/paint thread!!ONLY!!

Dude calm down. I had a M860ETU and gave it to my younger brother, so I know what I'm talking about. I did the solder mod with my QX9300 and it wasn't stable. It also brought up my temps significantly. Then again it was a quad so what else did I expect. ATI/nVidia are both using the MXM3.0b cards in the furure. This is why newer models have this slot. The last MXM 2.1 card out is the GTX 280M. There will be no more 2.1 cards, because Clevo won't make them.

My P8600 2.4 runs soft use at 45c and maxs out at 75c .... still not sure if i should solder mod it or get a T9900.... if i get a T9900 ill prob soldermod it as well... but im not sure how high the T9900 can safely go soldermod...

i asume with my sepecs mine will run fine at 3.0 soldermod.. as long as my memmory is good enugh. but yer question remains... how high have people pushed T9900..? i remember some post long ago of 3.3 on m860tu c2d.. but i cant find it again.. and it was earlyer cpu batches. if all i can get on T9900 is 3.2 i prob just stick with a cheap soldermod and hope for the best.

The MXM info is wrong.. clevo dont make the cards for their sistems only configer heatspreaders/brakets for customers via package.

just because new one suport 3.0b does not mean nvida are using MXM3.0b ON ALL new models ... take for example Macbook pro... etc

u will still get MXM 2.1 cards (mabey even top end .. mabye not).. its mentioned in manufacture booklet from ATi and NVidia them seleves.. to not drop proportional suport (not to make cassis enginers freak out thank god) we are in a transitional period atm to asume 2.1 compleatly fased out is ignorent.. esp for 2010 releases.

i wouldnt be suprized if MXM 2.1 is still standard for 2010 releases.. but prove me wrong when we find out!

Nvidia make cards to work with more than just Clevo (one of the fue with 3.0b..) ... i wouldnt be suprized if top end has it but middle wont be 3.0b exclusive not a chance with the amount of 2.1 chassis around.

So quick to CRY OUT DATED on this forum lately... no sentimental sense ^_^

Any way any one have any leaked documentation links of 2010 Ati/Nv releases?... i only have crappy ces booklet handout that says little to nun. any thing leaked to fud or some thing? ive not been trolling been busy playing games and working my laptop till its finish is raw and ready for a new layer of matt lime lemon paint!..

But hey mabye you right mabye my little old m860tu is a real lemon !(HAHAHAHA)!

MXM 2.1 was used by a small amount of manufacturers like Clevo. In 99% of laptops, the GPU cannot be ungraded, because most are soldered in. In the few that can, they had specific slots or used proprietory slots, like Asus. IIRC Soviet gave a lot of detail into the MXM 2.1 vs MXM 3.0 debate.

Chin he can't even install windows 7 without needing help. Just let the thread die, he's never going to do half this stuff. He will be back complaining when he can't make any upgrades to his system in a few weeks.

Heathkidd, it looks like you will be planning on keeping this laptop for a long time and that I am so happy for you. The same laptop served me well and man it was so hard for me to let that dang baby go to move onto the W860cu. I am always weak in the knees for the latest and greatest technology. :D The M860tu was the best laptop I ever had with the looks and performance that won't phase out for a long time.

I think it will be really cool to see how your project will end up especially with the paint scheme you have chosen makes it totally unique. Upgrading to a ssd from poster above with the link was the cheapest for 256gb I could find although I don't know what the specs are. As for resistor modding your cpu will save you big time from buying a new one but there are risks involve and I have heard that some have done it and ran unstable. For your video card, Nvidia/Sager won't be making anything more powerful than the 280m gtx in a MXM 2.1 format. I could be wrong but soon Sager will be moving onto MXM 3.0 standard for all their future cards.

i guess its best i just wait and see what we can get hold of from ATi and Nvidia and see what are bios suported rather than debate speculatives.

If any info leaks could u please PM me it.. im busy on projects atm and sadly cant troll for hours :!(

i guess if your turn out correct and 280m GTX and 3800m ? is it? are the last i guess ill go with the Quadro with more SPus and work on custom bios to turn on off/voldmod so its usable ..... then again with my very cool CPU and a SSD mabye my temps will be ok.. (could mod fans i guess while i do compleat sistem rebuild/paint)..

much to plan.. but looks like all im waiting on now is 2010 ATi/Nvid releases. thanks for your help.. mabye ill play DSi while i wait... PC gaming is dead till patch 3.3 of wow hehe. All ill be using this lappy to do for the next 12months is record monster hunter 3tri (wii) footage and RE5/L4D2/MW2... my hardware should be ok for the forseable future no need to get hasty.

What memmory did you use when you soldermod to 333.. Do u know if Rev3 of M860tu suports 6gig of DDR3?

i guess i could do my soldermod early and test it out.

I used OCZ DDR3 RAM @ 1333MHz. The system supports up to 8GB of RAM. I had 4GB in Mine.

Max temp of 75c on the P8600 are not "very cool". I suggest you change the thermal paste and/or clean the vent.

My P9500 never reaches 60c. Just ran crysis benchmarks (GPU 3 times and CPU 3 times) without the cooler, and the hottest CPU core hit 58c and the coldest hit 53c.

Orthos or OCCT didn`t push it past 45c after 10min.

If you haven`t undervoltet it, I recommend you do that too. Some RAM heatsinks helps too. Especially if you actually will go through with your plans.

The validity of this thread aside; I did find the link [Option 2] to HP site for the T9900 intriguing. (I have been considering purchase of T9900 for awhile.) Can any of the informed members of this forum, comment on the compatibility of the chip as described to fit in my M860TU?

    Thanks in advance!

It will work with the M860TU. You will not have any problems with it.
