I'm going to be ordering an 8170 from XoticPC next week and am in the process of gathering accessories. One particular item has left me scratching my head. The under pad cooler. Basically, I need something is is comfortable on the lap, yet quiet (passive would be fine) and rugged. Also, it needs to be compact enough to easily pack in the same bag as the laptop. Any suggestions?

    A 17" cooler isn't exactly portable..

They would have to fold to fit in a bag, and the only folding cooler I can think of is the NZXT Cryo LX, but it's too sharp to use on one's lap.

Well you could go the route of just a simple sheet of plexiglass, cut to fit under your machine. The cooling should be more than enough that just a hard flat surface will be sufficient. The problem with a 17" cooling pad is that being big enough to fit yet portable is nearly impossible.

I say get the Cooler Master U3. It's what I use and is extremely lightweight. I have the Cryo as well, and it does the job VERY well, however it weighs half as much as my laptop... >.<

    Go for the U3

How portable is the U3? I'm looking for something that can be packed along with the laptop.

I dont mean to thread hijack guys, but what is the best underpad cooler for a P170HM/8170 regardless of portability? Just pure coolness?

you can easily pack the u3 but i doubt you could use it on your lap.
but it is one of the most higly suggested coolers here (even though it only lowered my temps by about 2-5c during gaming and no real effect outside gaming).
