I updated my bios on my 5796 about a year ago and it invalidated my copy of vista ultimate 64. Unfortunately, the activation key on the bottom of the pc was scratched off and I could not re-validate it. I want to upgrade to Windows 7, but I am afraid that not having a validated copy of windows will somehow screw up the upgrade. Does anyone know whether this will cause a problem installing a new version of windows or not?

You should be fine. As long as the new version of win7 is legit it should work

I have recently performed this same thing on another computer. You would think it wouldn't work, because it is very easy to install someone else's windows disk on your computer and then use an upgrade version of windows 7 to save money. I guess Microsoft either didn't consider this, or doesn't care.

you can install an upgrade version on a clean system without a key - and then upgrade it to itself...

Haha, that's crazy I hadn't even thought of trying installing the upgrade over the clean install from the upgrade packaged software. That is crazy that they would allow that.
Then again, its really not that hard to call Microsoft and beg for another key and get it. I've done this several times before as well. I change hardware on my desktop all the time causing invalidation.
Unvalidated vista 64 upgrade to Windows 7?
