Wow, this is interesting. Too bad it wasn't post #666 in the thread...
Back on topic (or at least what we were talking about) I remember that early in the P180HM owner's lounge Myth confirmed it could handle dual 6990m's but not dual 580m's. Link: GPU's that work in P180HM. So the 580m must be more power-hungry than the 6990m.
-
oh im SO in, this is just too much fun
+1 for Diablo IV
and oh yeah the 580M is deff way more power-hungry than the 6990M, hands down -
Let's take another screenshot when they're all the same color

I just noticed...
AMD Radeon HD 7970M Crossfire - Notebookcheck.net Tech
the 7970M Xfire is 100% in 3DM Vantage... aka 31k -

Just wondering, but when you try drawing too much power, does it throttle, lose power completely, or does the brick explode?
-
-
^^^^*was thinking same thing*

Actually, the AC adapters are very resilient. They have a circuit breaker inside. So far, I am still using the one that shipped with my system.
Nothing serious happens other than everything grinds to a halt because you end up switched to battery power. CPU enters a low power state and so do the GPUs. That's a lot better than blowing up, LOL.
This only happens when you keep pushing things over and over, like running back-to-back 3DMark11 or Vantage benchmark runs without any opportunity for the AC adapter to cool down while massively overclocked. If I OC the CPU to like 4.8-4.9GHz and have the 580s bumped to .92v and 860/1720/1800, for example, after about the 3rd loop in 3DMark11 or Vantage it will sometimes trip. If I place the AC adapter on its narrow edge or place it near the laptop when I am benching with my portable air conditioning unit, it usually stays cool enough to not reset itself. -
portable A/C!? lol, now theres some serious benchmarker at work

Are the P170HM and P170EM adapters the same? or is there a difference.
**Off topic**
is there a problem with the forums? I can't seem to be able to make a new thread at all. Upon pressing "preview post" or "post thread" it would refresh into a white screen with nothing inside it.I'd like to make a thread but I've been on firefox and IE but no cigar with both, same blank white screen.

I finally switched to the 7970m!! It was obvious that my laptop wouldn't arrive tomorrow (still pending parts), which is the day I originally hoped to have it by. That was the only reason I ordered the 675m, so I decided to switch as I had already waited the three weeks for it to launch.

It will still need ram and HDD upgrades down the road, but this should last me at least 3 generations.
High gamut screens are totally worth it (for me, at least), as I model and texture a lot of environments and want them to look exactly the way I imagine them. -
now you have to wait another two weeks lulz, where did u order from?

Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
So far i know that the 7970m works in x7200 even in crossfire, but nothing still on HM models.
An Eurocom contact I know said that they are conducting in house testing this week, I'll know something by the end of this week hopefully.
Theorically it should work as the latest HM bios doesn't performs extensive checks on the gpu installed. The only problem could be the temp readings by the EC like it happens with dell cards.
Let's cross fingers -
-
and its also been shown to work in an m15x and X7200! so would be a big surprise if the 7970M turned out to be incompatible with the other older clevo models
heres to hoping guys! -
And MSI as well
Looks like the 7970M is universal

With all the pressure they're putting to themselves and the companies that work for them, I'm pretty sure they're gonna demand a very high starting price if they are planning on releasing a 7970m competitor. probably twice the price of 7970m for 5-10 fps difference on performance. They need to be competitive on prices too.
-
aaand covering this thread as well...
heres another m17x r4 review with the 7970M (not by notebookcheck):
Google Übersetzer
cheers -
Now I'm just hoping this card can run unreal 4 games if they come out 2013, they might not untill 2014 though . They released some screens and man Unreal Engine 4 looks crazy smexy. Might have to run on high not ultra
. Or get a 8970m next year or the year after haha.

How much are we looking at to upgrade from, say, 485M to 675M through resellers?
-
Why burn that much money on a 10-15% upgrade? Better to overclock your 485M and wait to see how the 680M turns out.
-
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
It's not even 10-15%, most 485m like mine can stay stable without over volt at 700/1800.
Only reason to upgrade to a 675m is the fact to run the gpu at 800mhz and the inability to upgrade to a 7970m or 680m.
And giving the latest news the 7970m doesn't work well in older HM models. -
kingpin, u destroyer of dreams!!!
heres to hoping still! i want facts on that *sigh*

oh hey kingpin! i just remembered something: are u SURE that reseller of yours used CLEVO cards in their HM testing and not DELL cards? cuz the dell cards have already been shown to do exactly that in clevo laptops: theyre not recognized properly temperature-reading-wise and thus force the laptops to shut down right away after booting.
-
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Yup, the reseller ive spoken with uses only clevo parts. In fact they sold out the hd7970m and he confirmed next shipment would happen around 8th of June.
Also it's a quite known reseller, he knows his stuff, I doubt he used Dell ES/QS cards.
I only hope he did something wrong, as I said I've asked both xotic and Eurocom to test the card in HM barebones, so hope hasn't been lost completely yet. -
keeping fingers crossed then
-
A Polish reseller have revealed the performance of the 4GB 680M. 14% faster than 7970M
-
I was looking at the bluemobility site just because I was curious. I have no idea how reputable that website is, but seems to hint that the 680m will be quite a bit more than the 7970m just by looking at the relative upgrade prices. That is a polish site, so their currency is zlotys. Doing a conversion, the 7970m is $167 more whereas the 680m is $600?!?

There are so many different price of 680M floating around right now so god knows what the final price will be:
Monster notebooks: 680M cost $180 more than 7970M
Rabook: 680M cost $237 more than 7970M
PCSpecialist: 680M cost $277 more than 7970M

Actually the pricing looks good so far ($200-$250). I think I am sold
.
-
Yeah me too. What we have here is basicly a mobile GPU performing like GTX 580...
-
Wow, if those performance figures for the 680m are true, it really makes me think about going ahead and switching to the 675m and upgrading to the 680m when it is released.
