Ok, so let's pretend I was able to secure a used (6 months) 5796 at a ridiculous price.
Let's say all I really want to do is play GTA IV at decent settings, and we know that to play GTA IV, I'll need a decent Quad Core processor with a decent vidcard.
So would it be possible for me to somehow upgrade the motherboard of my 5796 to the new 5797 mobo and buy a Quad Core processor for it, all under the general price of buying a new Sager NP5797 with said Quad Core processor?
Whatch'all think?
-
Sorry, but you won't be able to swap motherboards unless EVERY port and dimension between the two chassis are the same. Basically there is nothing you can do about this.
-
fortunately you can switch motherboards without running into any problems.
the M570TU (5796) and ETU (5797) are exactly the same chassis and motherboard... the only change was the quad-core support.
Greg was referring to previous M570RU, which may have 99% the same chassis, had no HDMI or eSATA port... like the more recent M570TU. -
As Chris Hansen would say during a reading of Pedophile Predator chat logs:
"Oh baby, oh baby!"
Anybody got an idea on the price range that this would fall into? -
Motherboard for M570ETU is about $450-500 USD
Its sold by almost any Clevo vendor that sells that notebook.
Check out these sites first:
- www.rjtech.com (under Notebook Parts)
you can contact a Clevo vendor that you prefer to ask if you can get it through them and for how much. -
Ok so just in case anybody finds this interesting, and in the name of Science:
RJTech has the following listed:
Q9000 2.00 GHz 6MB 1066 $389.00
Motherboard for M570ETU $480.00
So I guess it'd be cheaper just to buy a new 5797 with those same basic specs.
Oh well, time to go sell the freshly acquired used 5796 and try to make up the difference in price.
Once again Gophn, thanks a lot. -
Don't forget about getting an ES quad. They run about $400 on ebay. Were you to go that route, I think it might be a lot cheaper to get the NP5796 and upgrade. Besides, you can sell you old mobo for a couple hundred bucks, likely.
-
An ES Quad? Pardon my ignorance, but I don't understand.
Also, where do you think I'd be able to sell the mobo? And would I have to send the lappie in to the manufacturer to change it out or do it myself?
This is turning into quite the project. -
Engineering Sample. They are on ebay.
-
the ES quad-core CPUs are the best bang for the buck... no doubt.
-
emike09 want to tell us or link us the username on ebay you buy it from?
-
just search QX9300 and find a cheap cpu, it will be es.
-
Got a few more questions:
A) Are there any performance issues to worry about when purchasing these CPUs?
QX9300 2.53 Ghz/12M/1066/QGNG ES/QS
I guess there is a difference in the term they use for the final versions of these chips.
2) Would the NBR Marketplace be the best place to sell the older mobo and processor?
45nm Intel C2D T9550 / 6MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz, 1066MHz FSB
Third) Before I try to contact the original reseller who the laptop was bought from (6months of original warranty used), I just wanted to know if I would be able to take advantage of the labor warranty and have professionals switch out the mobo and CPU?
I'm guessing IF that is possible, I'd just send them all the parts and the lappie in a box and ask them to send the stuff back (switched out)?
Or would I have to switch it out myself? I'm absolutely terrified of heatsinks and processors and motherboards and grounding myself and midgets.

I must spread some reputation around before giving it to emike and GOphn again :S
