I'm planning to purchase the 170EM with the 7970m, for an additional $170 I can upgrade from the i73630QM to the 3740QM. Is the $170 upgrade worth it?

Well it depends on what you want to do. For gaming probably not, for CPU intensive programs where you need to get the most CPU power possible then the $170 price isnt too bad. For gaming even the i7 3630QM do an excellent job, mainly because gaming performance is based on the GPU.

Depends on your income. Most people stick with the basic i7.

Well I see, I do a bit of graphic design and intense gaming. Would there be a noticeable performance while gaming? Perhaps a 2-3 FPS boost @1080p? Or is it more?

Depends on the game. BF3 SC2 maybe. World of warcraft, probably not.

Well if the FPS boost isn't that huge(at least 5FPS), I guess I'll be sticking with the 3630QM then.

Put that $170 to go from the 7970M to the 680M

weeeelll....if u can afford it, you could go for the 3740qm and OC is nicely by 400 Mhz, which is not possible with the 36xxqm cpus :p

same opinion (go to 680M) ,as i read somewhere (on intel site i think) it`s not a big difference , if you want to upgrade the processor go at least to 38xxQM ,to make it worth .... the effort

No boost in games. Even if you had a CFX 7970M or SLI 680M you wouldn't notice a difference in performance with that CPU upgrade.

This. The CPU isn't worth the upgrade, people asking for such things usually don't need the power :p just take the best GPU and game on
