Thinking about getting 9170 but want to be able to upgrade video card maybe 2 years from now. Have a gateway 7811fx which I feel has lasted me a long time with its 9800m. The next laptops I get I want to last as long as possible.

Take a look around the Owner's lounges, you will find some members are currently contemplating upgrading the graphics card in their 3 year old machine to something a bit more current.
There has been no verification yet as to if it is possible or not, but you will likely find your answers once the 7970M is out if people are capable of doing so.
