Hey all, havn't been around for a while but I have a few questions

I was planning on replacing my 8700m on my Sager 5793. I just wanted to know where I could find a 8800m as it seems the xoticpc website no longer carries it. And if possible, would I be able to put in a newer 9800m? Or would it be incompatible? And if I could do it, where would I find a 9800m?

I was also wondering about upgrading my RAM. I as of now only have 2gb RAM running in Windows XP, but I wanted to upgrade to Vista and thus upgrade my RAM. So whats the maximum amount of RAM the 5793 can handle? And what type of RAM should I use?

Call your reseller to see what they can do for you about the video card upgrade.

As for the RAM - you need DDR2-667, aka PC2-5300. The NP5793 can take 4GB max (2x 2GB). I suggest Corsair or OCZ, I have had a flawless experience with both brands.

you an upgrade your RAM to 800Mz. Right now, yours is is at 667. The FSB speed of your T9300 is 800Mhz, therefore able to support 800Mhz RAM. If you get Windows Vista and upgrade, 4GB will help, but it would be best to get the 64bit version. Windows vista will only recognize around 3.5GB and won't utilize all of your components to their full potential. I have 64bit and don't have any problems, even playing games not for vista.

with the GPU upgrade, try contacting Sager and asking. I know that you can upgrade, since yours is MXM, but I am not sure if you have the ability to upgrade to a 9 series GPU.

Awesome news about the RAM. But do you know off the top of ur head if the 5793 could even handle the 9800? Because I heard its still cheaper than the 8800

Actually the DDR2-800 RAM will downclock to DDR2-667, because that is the max that the i965 mobile chipset supports.

Yes, upgrading to 4GB makes more sense if you have a 64-bit OS, or are planning to upgrade to 64-Bit.

Now how would I know if the Vista I purchase is 64-bit or not? When I look at the bestbuy website it doesnt specify.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you. When I check the Vista Ultimate on bestbuy.com it doesn't say weither or not it is the 64-bit version. When purchasing it, how would I decipher between the two?

If it states 64-bit, then it is Vista Ultimate x64.
If it does not state anything, i.e. "Vista Ultimate" only, then it is always presumed to be 32-bit.

If you already have the notebook, you can check whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit OS.

Oh no, I know I already have 32-bit, I'm running Windows XP. I wanted to upgrade to Vista Ultimate 64-bit. So when I do purchase it, how will I know if it is 64 bit or not?

If the OS is 64-bit, it will be mentioned. (Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit)
If the OS is 32-bit, it is normally not mentioned. (Windows Vista Ultimate SP1)

Actually, Vista Ultimate Retail will not specify ever, as the disc includes both 64 and 32 bit installers.
You will only see naming on OEM, and it will specify on both - but not in the name. The sleeve will say "This disc contains 32 bit software ONLY" or "This disc contains 64 bit software ONLY," depending which you have. Best buy is likely selling Vista Ultimate Retail.
If I were you, I'd buy this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116493

any vista license is valid for both 32 and 64 bit versions. If you buy an oem 32bit disc, you can download a 64bit disc image and install it with your key, it will work fine (I bought an oem 32bit disc, and am happily running 64bit)
