Swapping the drive out is a piece of cake, of course (remove hard drive cover panel, remove one screw, pop the drive out, pop the new drive in & reassemble).
I don't expect driver installation should be much of an issue either.
Any suggestions on software for blu-ray playback, whether codecs for Windows Media Player, or standalone software?
Any potential issues to look out for in the upgrade?

You wont need drivers it should just be all good to go.
You will need software. I use Total Media Theater 5, PowerDVD w/ blu ray is also popular
For Codec the k-lite package is good or when you download Media player classic that usually comes with it. You can also play blu rays on VLC player -
Excellent, thanks for the info.

Has Microsoft announced if Windows 8 Media Center will support Blu-ray playback? I'm hedging on "No," but it's worth a shot.

An article I was reading was indicating Win8 Media Center would not support Blu-Ray OR DVD playback without purchasing extra plugins, supposedly because they have to pay licensing fees, and many people aren't watching media from disks anymore. If Win8 is cheaper than Win7, and if the plugins are somewhere near the cost difference, then I'm good with that, but the skeptical side of me is waiting to see...
I'm also waiting to see if I'll be able to install my $15 copy of Win8 in a separate partition and continue using the copy of Win7 that came with my Sager. -
This article seems to indicate that Windows 8 Media Center includes Blu-ray support:
Making Windows Media Center available in Windows 8 - Building Windows 8 - Site Home - MSDN Blogs
It is a paid add-on, but it'll be included with Windows 8 Pro at the $39.99 promotional price; not the $14.99 new PC upgrade, though.
This rumor points to a $12.79 price:
Windows Media Center for Windows 8 to cost $12.79 for US? - Neowin
It's pretty rude that they're making us pay for it, but $12.79 is pretty cheap compared to what some Blu-ray suites cost. -
Yeah, I wouldn't be upset at paying under $20 to add DVD & blu-ray support. I might be a little grumpy to pay that much apiece, but would still probably pay it (especially if it's a quick & easy add and I could hold off until I actually found need for it).
Upgrading NP9150 to blu-ray drive, software suggestions?
