Hello all. I recently acquired a used NP9870 for a good deal that I plan on upgrading. I'm currently looking at the possibility of upgrading to a 7700K from the 6700K. I have read that it is possible to do and someone was working on the software necessary to do so. Did anything ever come of this? I cannot seem to find the thread where it was talked about. I would really like to upgrade my CPU as I plan on doing a lot of autocad work in the future and I really just like tinkering with things and have yet to try my hand at software. Any help will greatly appreciated. Thank you

All you need is a BIOS to recognise the 7th gen CPU.

The question is, why bother, you can undervolt and set the 6700K to the same multis as the 7700K. Other than the revised 14nm process making the 7th gen a tad more efficient and overclockable, they are basically identical

If you really want more CPU powah, look at adding cores by upgrading to 8th gen or 9th gen CPUs. My 9900K upgrade literally doubled the maximum output of the 6700K it replaced.

I was looking to get efficient power. Enough juice to get the job done but not so much that it drains battery down quickly. How would an 8th or 9th gen work? I thought only the kaby lake cores would work on these machines.

How would I go about getting a custom bios to support a 7700k? Would Prema be willing to sell one?

No matter what chip you get the battery wont improve. 8th and 9th gen would drain more power.

So the 7700K would be the most powerful CPU I could install without seeing a major drain on the battery, correct?

All of them including the 7700k can put a major drain on the battery. This device is not designed to last long on battery under load (330w power brick, 95Wh battery) it's just a limit or battery tech.

So I have found a couple of benchmarks of people who have installed a 7700K in a p870dm.
    Here: http://valid.x86.fr/qnklp9
    Also here: https://browser.geekbench.com/geekbench3/8500151

I now know it is totally possible to do. I just have to try and get the prema mod bios. I do not think I will be able to do this. Prema does not sell his bios to individual users, correct? Only retailers can get it I have read.

@Papusan How did you come by obtaining the bios?

It's totally possible, I ran it but you are going from a max 4.4ghz ish to 4.7ghz ish with a similar power consumption increase.

indeed. i started with the 4790K at 4.2 Ghz everyday, 4.5 Ghz benching and 4.8 Ghz balls to the wall (P751ZM)
followed by a 6700K with 4.5 Ghz everyday, 4.8 Ghz benching and 5.0 Ghz balls to the wall (P751DM)
followed by a 7700K with 4.8 Ghz everyday, 5.1 Ghz benching and 5.4 Ghz balls to the wall (P751DM)
now upgraded to a 9900K with... clocks still to be determined haha. but so far 5.2 Ghz seems to be balls to the wall :p (P751DM)

So there is no possible way to get 5.0 Ghz out of a 7700K, even if it won the silicon lottery? How did you run it?

The best ones were used for the 8086k generally so chances are generally not good.

If the prema bios is unavailable to me what other options do I have for this project? Any at all or should I just sell my processor and move on?

    Hi
Sorry for my english im french,
I want flash my p775dm3 but this bios work on kaby lake 7700k because i dont have money actualy To buy 8086k.
    Tanks.
Yes it will, bios supports all cpu's from skylake to coffee lake.

Hey,this mod work with my laptop too???Thnx

    https://postimg.cc/image/7lwd7fn3f/
Yes it does, download the attachment and you will find the modded bios for the clevo p870km and km1.

Follow the instructions and flash that bios.

hi.. awesome works.. so where can i get bios P750DM-G works for coffelake? kudoss
Download the attachment and click on the readme, it tells you that all p7xxdm bios are the same no matter what. Find that bios file and flash it to your laptop. Flash the "P7xxDM_9.bin" if you have a 9th series nvidia gpu OR flash "P7xxDM_10.bin" if you have 10th series nvidia gpu.

Do not flash any other bios not meant for your laptop though!

    Good luck

This gives me some hope :)

So I have purchased a sky pro programmer and the pomona clip. Now I play the waiting game so I can get to upgrading. I'm so tempted to just try to flash the bios without it but I need this computer for school lol.

I have done steps 1-8 listed in this thread where I got the bios: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...kylake-kabylake-clevo-lga1151-laptops.821694/
I haven't done step 9, pin mod, just because I cannot figure out how to do it. I do have a backup of the bios, I've just kinda given up at this point. I'm waiting on some thermal compound to arrive before I put everything back together as I just had liquid metal on hand and that doesnt work at all I found out. Today has been a day of learning, that's for sure.

So I just learned the 7700k does not require the pin mod. I believe now that my system is just bricked. Im trying to locate the bios chip to reprogram it

    Attempting to dismantle it now

So far I have removed a lot of screws and broken the casing on a fan. Everything is loose but wont come apart.

hey @Meaker@Sager there isn't a chance I could send this to Sager and have them do the mod for me is there? I feel way in over my head.

Okay, I have successfully dismantled the laptop to get to the bios chip. Now I just have to figure out this programmer

It seems the laptop I'm using cannot recognize the skypro. Any tips?

This was the bit to figure out before the flashing.... check the USB cable is ok, is it powering up? Did you install the drivers? What is showing in device manager?

The device shows in device manager with a little yellow sign and an exclamation mark. I believe it does not have the right drivers. I looked on coright's site and could not find the driver.

He really is a good guy. Walked me through everything and answered every question I had. Even hooked me up with a 7700K upgrade. Only problem is the screen won't work on boot. Laptop starts, LEDs light up, windows music plays, just the darn screen won't cooperate...
