When I purchased the Np8170 it said that the video card is upgradeable?

I have the 580m now and was wondering what new video cards are out and if I can upgrade it? How much better is the new video card?

No one would know. As the cards in the future unveil themselves, we'll know if they are compatible or not. Usually, upgradeable means your laptop has an MXM slot in which a compatible card of the same form factor can be swapped in.

newest info puts it to september (as in stocked and available), breaking P6k in 3dmark11, sporting 4GB memory and being offered at a 180GBP premium over the 7970M

We have no official word on the release of this card, we are in the dark as much as the rest of you on this.

Google is a great tool though. :D

Sounds like the 7970m probably is not going to work. Don't have high hopes for the 680m either. Heard about a reseller testing the 7970m and the laptop just beeps and shuts down after 30 seconds, apparently reading the temps wrong in those 30 seconds.

They say its because PCIE 3.0 but the symptoms are the same as with a few other cards.

When they said the GPU was upgradeable, they kinda lied. They have given up adding support for newer GPUs on older laptops. So don't expect a BIOS update to fix this either.

Unfortunately, this has proven NOT to be the case with Clevo laptops.

They seem to only support cards that they were released with, or cards that are based off of similar architectures, save for the 6970m in the w860cu and w870cu.

For example, my w870cu refused to work with a Quadro 3000m and ES 460m even after the 460m was flashed to a Clevo BIOS.

I think its related to the EC and the way it reads temps. I don't think we will ever know for sure but I think its safe to say Clevos are not as upgradeable as they claim to be.

I'm pretty sure that was tested using Dell cards with the Dell VBIOS rather than the new Clevo cards. The jury is still out regarding the Clevo iterations in the HMs, but I *believe* I saw a Mythlogic post stating that he had a "favorable" opinion on whether it would work.

I would say "no". You have the highest speed vga card in Nvidia 500 series.

GTX 680M is not available right now, so I do not think anyone try it yet.

Sounds like we're out of luck without some sort of BIOS update.

From a post of a quote from a parts re/seller

Thanks for that link. That would have otherwise taken a while longer to diffuse over here.

That definitely sucks though. I have a vested interest in having it work (and on an immediate basis). Drat. I'll have to consider dialing back to a 675M and having wasted a month for nothing. Otherwise, I risk losing another month for nothing (time till it's back on shelves and further test in the HMs). Decisions, decisions.
