I've gotten up to the step of removing the four screws holding the heatsink against the GPU. But the heatsink is not lifting up! I've tried giving it a little force but it refuses to lift up. I'm afraid to do anymore for fear of bending or scratching the GPU. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I notice there are two screws holding the silver panel near the heatsink labeled 5 and 6. Do these also need to come off before you remove the heatsink ?

    In this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSyH-gfSsxI

At 1:42, he grabs the sticker on top of the heatsink, pulls up and the heatsink lifts right off. Mine is not lifting up. However i see there's a stem that's attached to the silver plate on the bottom.

Is the 170SM heatsink different from the one pictured here, the 150EM? Do i have do something differently ?

I;m really scared i've now bent the copper heatsink out of shape. Also im worried me pulling up and down has scrapped the gpu., Any help please!!!

Most Likely your TIM is causing this stiction if all the screws are out.

Fire up a GPU benchmark to heat it up and try again, should come right off. Make sure to put the screws back when you do the benchmark.

IF you have any questions, either take pics and post it or you'll have to wait until someone with knowledge of a a 170SM can help you more specifically on how its retained.

Ok guys, I have finally managed to get the heat sink off after removing those 3 screws holding down the silver plate like i suspected. Once those 3 extra screws were removed (in addition to the 4 as highlighted in the original post), the heat sink came right off.

Unfortunately the temps have gotten much worse. It idles fine like it used to, around 40C, but whenever i fire up any game or benchmark, the temps are spiking like crazy. Would spike up from 50C to 90C instantly. Does this mean my paste job is bad ? Will i need to repaste? Or has my heat sink been broken like i suspected? Do I need to screw in the 4 screws tighter?

Did you put back the heatsink without repasting? You dun goof'd.
Did you use cheapo thermal paste? You dun goof'd.
Did you needlessly take off the heatsink (Why did you do what you did?)? You dun goof'd.

    That is all.

    :)

I applied Artic Mx-4 paste using the bead method, and spread it around using my fingers in sandwich bag. Only then did i reattach the heat sink. I did this in first place because my temps were hitting the low 90's after 20-30 minutes of gameplay.

Do not spread the paste with anything.
When you apply a drop of paste, just press it with the heatsink itself and it will spread perfectly and evenly.
You just have to press hard and then screw the heatsink into position.

If you spread the paste with anything else before applying the heatsink, you get bad conductivity and small air bubbles will form.
As a result, the temps are gonna be high and you are left wondering what the hell just happened.
So yeah, re-apply the paste, small drop in the middle, cover with heatsink (all properly cleaned), press hard, screw together and profit!

Thanks guys, I'll try the repaste today using the new instructions of using smaller amounts and letting heatsink pressure spread the paste.

One question: How much does it cost to replace the copper heatsink on the GPU for Clevo 170SM / Sager NP8270? I purchased my unit from XoticPC.

You gotta ask XoticPC about that.

We could look into getting you a new heatsink, for pricing you can either open a service ticket and our guys will help you out, or for a part like the heatsink you may be able to get one directly from Sager by emailing [email protected] with your inquiry.
