So I ordered a laptop without a hard drive so that I could simply use my old one (with Windows 7 Pro and Office 2007 Pro, both legit). Would that work? Or would I have to run it through Microsoft (to deactivate/reactivate stuff) to get it to work?

You'll need to reactivate, I'm sure it'll raise alarm when your system specs suddenly change so drastically.

I've not had to reactivate when performing a similar function but you never know with Microsoft.

Thats basically what I'm doing, I have two old hdd, one of them with Windows 7, and Office. I figured I couldn't transfer them over to the new computer but had to reformat them and re install Windows. How soon are you getting your laptop and when you do keep us posted on if it works.

Well Brett@Xotic is actually taking care of my order, so he'll keep me updated. First update is sometime in mid-April.

I have some doubts that your Windows will work when you put the hdd in the new laptop, it depends on the configuration of the old laptop. You might have to reinstall Windows and implicitly Office and activation will be necessary.

If it is a retail copy of Windows you may only need to re-activate it.
If it is a OEM copy you may have to haggle with Microsoft to let you use it on a different computer.

Definitely a retail copy of Windows, and a student license might I add (from MSDNAA). And I purchased Office from Ultimate Steal (again an academic deal, but download-only).
