Just dropped off my notebook for repair at sager in city of industry in California. The screen went black and all attempts to boot up have failed. Ive had it since middle of 2008 or so. Prior to the black screen the laptop made a weird checkerboard in yellow across the screen in the middle of a movie. I've had failing vista home premium updates for the past four months or so. My battery is also cracked on the outside but the notebook still powers up, it just doesn't boot. I spoke and dealt with a guy named Chris at the sager building. He said it would take a max of ten days and they would quote me once they took a look. Anyone have any idea how much this might cost and how long it will likely take? I have a very excellent repair company ready to receive it in Washington and I'd like it back before mid next week. I'm also overdo to write a review of it here on these forums.

Turnaround time is usually around one to two weeks for out of warranty repairs. The cost for repair depends on what needs to be replaced and how much "labor" they put into it. From the way you described it, the cause for your problem is fairly vague. But it is definitely a video issue. Either your VGA cable on the motherboard end or the panel end is loose, or your GPU is faulty. For your "booting" issue, if your screen remains black and doesn't POST, then it can be a bad GPU or a bad stick of memory. If it did not appear to POST, the motherboard should make a beeping noise, which is the code for a specific error depending on the beep sequence. A lot of this is pointing towards the GPU so you should have reseated it before you left it in Sager's hands. But it can't be helped; there is nothing that we can do here as Sager has your computer. Let's just hope that they don't hit you hard with the bill.

Anyone know the proper price for the cost of a Sager's 9800M GT video card? I currently have a laptop in the repair shop and I am told I need a new video card. The price I was quoted was very high. I have asked Xotic Pc if there are cheaper video cards which sager can instead install to repair my computer. Does anyone know if there are? Please help me and thanks for your time.

    It should be around USD800.
You have to tell what is your Sager model to know about alternative GPU.

They are asking 600 to replace the 9800M Gt with a new video card of the same type. Does this sound like a good deal or expensive? Please let me know. Pretty please help me.

It's a Sager NP5793, they are asking 600 to put in a new one since the last one stopped working after 1.5 years. I'd like to know if it is worth it.

For the Sager NP5793 (Clevo M570RU), you can use these cheaper GPU : 8700M GT, 9800M GTS

At $600, you're probably better off saving up for a new laptop. Did you try baking your old GPU?

    600 is really expensive for a 98M GT, i remember a 280M GTX costs only 520USD.

You should buy this 9800M GTS from eBay. $345 OBO, so you can probably negotiate to $300, maybe even a bit less.

For the approximate proper prices of these GPU, its as following :

9800M GT=USD530 (sorry the USD800 was for the 8800M GTX i was confused)
    9800M GTS=USD410
    8700M GT=USD370

Note that these prices are for a new not used GPU, so if you find a used one, you should have it for lower price.

Nonetheless, the price for the 9800M GT was substantially lower, because the top card for the 9 series was the 9800M GTX.

As it turns out Sager shrewdly does not do repairs with parts that aren't theirs. This certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth regarding my first laptop from them. I can either give it to a third party to repair or fork over $700 to get a new videocard and battery with sager. Secure remote support says they can do it for $450. They are located in Washington. A bit far from here in so cal. Anyone got any advice? I'm not exactly skilled with laptops or repair.

Replacing the videocard is way easier than you're thinking. Buy one and do it yourself. All you need is a screwdriver.

My 8800m gtx died and I have no experience working on laptops. With some help from these forums I diagnoses and replaced with no problems. Much cheaper than going through Sager who wanted $800 from me.

So I sent in my np5793 to sager and they said the cause of my black screen of death is a bad video card. They quoted me $600 to put in a new 9800M GT. I would like to ask everyone if it is cheaper and easier to put in one myself. Someone told me all you need is a screw driver and that it's a simple procedure. Is it easy to do this? Can I put in a cheaper video card than the 9800M GT? Please give your advice. Thanks for your time and assistance.

You can put in a cheap 9600m gt or 8700m gt card bought from ebay for probably 100-200$. You need more than just a screwdriver to replace it though, you will need thermal paste as well.

ugh search sucks for this website when it comes to older articles.
    here you go http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=204160
Been a long time since I did anything with a 579x laptop, but from what I remember it was fairly easy to remove the gpu,
For a guaranteed upgrade you want to go the 8700m gt route. A 9600m gt should work and would be a better buy, but it may require some modification to the gpu casing to make it fit right.

If this happens to me, should I just buy something off ebay then ? Or send it in and get it from XoticPC officially ? Because sending it in for me isn't something small, since it'll be sent from India...

You should check the marketplace section of this forum every now and then; I have seen 8800gtx's go for around 250$ before.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/nVIDIA-Quadro-F...emQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item5d27a26564

This is one of the best I can find on ebay; however, I really don't know if its going to work in your model or not. I know a few people managed to cram one of those into their M860TU's, so who knows. Gotta be careful with those engineering samples, though...

so if heat cycles tend to damage video cards, perhaps it is better to let my card idle at 50C (Powermizer off) instead of 40C (Powermizer on) ? In theory 50-75C temperature cycles would be less damaging then 40-75C ones?

They seem to be cropping up in the gateway section now as well, so right now its starting to look like there could be a problem. I think the 8600m gt's started showing issues right around a year.

8800m gtx and 9800m gts(with latest bios) will definitely work. I have heard people talking about 9800m gt and gtx cards but never a confirmation of whether they are actually supported. I seriously doubt any 200 series card will work, even if they fit, the bios does not have support for them.

    Donut.

Can you describe your black screen symptoms??
I also have been having random black screen lockups for about 6 months now, but did not experience them for the entire first year of owning my NP5793.

I have an 8800M GTX Nvidia card. My warranty is void so I am also looking at options. But don't exactly want to spend $500 on a 'maybe' fix. I took my laptop apart and tried to test the ram sticks individually, but still experienced crashes. However, there is no physical damage or defects on my video card.

I am going to try getting some thermal paste (if I can find it in my city) this weekend and seeing if it is just a heating problem, as when I took it apart the paste in the middle had worn down a lot.

I'll let you know my findings..
