Black screen symptoms: started when watching a movie. Right in the middle the screen had a yellow checkerboard appear over it. I shut down manually and restarted but it happened again. Restarting again resulted in the same thing even in safe mode and using the vista cd to check memory didn't work either. Restoring to an earlier point didn't help either. Finally the screen just started staying black with only the mouse cursor visible. Then the screen would just turn black with no mouse. At this point I sent it in to sager who daignosed it as a bad video card. Supposedly this is a problem with nvidia cards.

Hi, anyone know if any ATI cards can easily go into an NP5793?

Can you get the Hi End ATI cards?

I'm not sure yet. I haven't looked. I'd obviously rather pursue getting an ATI card though instead of another nVIDIA due to their obvious heat damage weakness. Is it possible to put an ATI into an NP5793?

The M570TU can take the Ati 3870, 4850 and 4870. I have no idea about the M570RU.

So my Np5793 was in the Sager shop for a permanent black screen of death. XoticPC tells me on behalf of Sager that I have a bad 9800M GT and it needs to be replaced. I pick it up today because there's no way I'm going to pay the quote they gave me. I get it home and pop open the video card case...and a 8800M GTX is staring at me...did they just swap out a card? Did I get scammed?

Not if they swapped one that works. Does it work?

Well, before jumping to any conclusions, did you make sure it was actually your laptop and not a mix up (check serial number, an identifying markings, etc)?

BTW, does it work now that there is an 8800 GTX in there (just curious)?

Aren't they the same card? Isn't the 9800m GT just a rebrand of the 8800m GTX? Same G92 core, same 65nm process, same video memory, same clocks.

    What he said.

Some of the early 9800M GT were basically 8800M GTX with the 9800M GT sticker stuck on them. Others were labeled 9800M GT right from the start.

At any rate, they are the same card.

same laptop, doesnt work still, but why would they tell me I have a 9800M GT when the card says otherwise? Label names shouldnt be mixed up like that. Is it possible they swapped it?

    Blame Nvidia for that one.

It's almost certainly the same card.

the 8800M GTX and the 9800M GT are the same card for these systems, same clocks, same GPU.

Nvidia just decided to update the name of the card... and didnt do anything to really improve the card.

Just finished baking it though...it works perfectly fine now. I'm going to download speedfan to make sure my card never gets even a bit too warm.

I'm sure it's the same card, Nvidia released a bios to put on some of the old 8800M GTX's to make them detected in Windows and other devices as a 9800M GT since they are pretty much exactly the same, there are also a few chips around that were actually produced from the start as 9800M GT's and it reflects that on the die as well, but their production was short lived.

In any case if your card is dead you can use the revitalization technique used in this Alienware thread to try and bring your card back to life.

I've already pointed you to this thread in the other post you made about your video card. You might want to try this, and save yourself some cash.

EDIT: I see you've already done it, guess I should read threads to the last page..

ok, I merged all of DonutMouse's threads together.

It is against forum rules to cross post, especially when they all have to do with the same underlying topic.

As for videocard that will work for the Clevo M570RU (aka. Sager NP5793):
    - pretty much any MXM II, III, IV (2.x) modules
    - Nvidia Go 7950 GTX
    - Nvidia 8700M GT
    - Nvidia Quadro 1600M
    - Nvidia 8800M GTX ~ Nvidia 9800M GT
    - Nvidia 9800M GTS

possibles, since they are of the same MXM (2.x) modules, but not officially supported by the Clevo BIOS so they might not get fully recognized:
    - Nvidia Quadro 2700M
    - Nvidia 9800M GTX
    - Nvidia GTS 160M (2.1)
    - Nvidia GTX 260M (2.1)
    - Nvidia GTX 280M (2.1)

Thanks Gophn. I apologize for my cross-posting. You should feel the ecstasy of baking a busted video card only to pop it back into the laptop (after cooling of course) and to see it glow to life! :D

    9800M GTS
    9800M GT

DO NOT pay Sager $600 for the 9800M GT. The 9800M GTS which I quoted you in post #16 can be had for half the price, and anyone here could walk you through the installation process.

I'm not Kevin Jack 2.0, I just baked it and it works great.
