    Hey all,

My video card on my Sager NP8660 has failed and I need to replace it. What would you recommend for a guy that games quite a bit but isn't looking for the most expensive option?

    Thanks!

What card did you have previously? What games do you usually play?

The GTX260M is fairly cheap and good bang for the buck. Think the last we saw they were around $4xx.

Thats not cheap at all. You can get an entire Asus laptop with a gtx 260m for that price.

Right now there are 9800m GT for around 160$ which work well and are nearly as good as the 260m. I can also sell you a very similar card for 130$, PM me if you're interested.

The problem is that all of these cards have a high rate of failure.
The card I can sell you is the cheapest option, it will also run the coolest, which means it has less of a chance of failure.

All that said, the BEST option is here, if it works (which it probably will):
    ASUS W90 HD4870 1GB DDR3 MXM III VGA Card [W90] - $224.99- laptop-ac-adapter.org

This card is not part of a defective series like all of the g92 based cards. It is also a very high preforming card, above the gtx 260m.

Good luck, let us know what you decide and post the results! :)

    P. S.

There are many gtx 280m, 260m, ATI 4870 on the market which are Dell/Alienware cards. They will all probably be cheaper, and NONE of them will fit or work on your laptop. You need a MXM 2.1 card, not 3.0, although you can use a type III card as long as its not MXM 3.0. Confusing, I know.

    I recommend an FX3600M, flashed as 9800MGT.

What websites do you recommend to purchase notebook video cards? I went to newegg and PC world. Wasn't able to find anything on there. Thanks!

I hope its not a 3850, that would be lame.

I use paypal. Ebay won't give you any extra protection.
I ship worldwide with affordable rates. :)

Like I said, your other options are upgrading with the 4870, or actually you can get some cheaper stuff on Ebay. But they are pretty crappy, older cards.
    nVidia G84 256M MXM-III(HE) Video Card G84-710-A2 | eBay

This is basically an 8700m GT.

MXM cards are basically OEM products. They were never really intended to be sold at retail to the public (and even if they were, the market is tiny for MXM cards sold that way). The only other places besides used sales at eBay or elsewhere would be through a reseller/importer (if they still have the older cards) or through a site like MXM-upgrade.com

Would you recommend I contact Sager or nvidia? Would it be possible to order anything through them? Or are there any just nvidia resellers?

You could check with the former, but Nvidia won't be able to help you as they don't actually manufacture these cards. MXM-upgrade, resellers and importers, and the second-hand market are the only real options.

I was able to revive my 9800GT three times by baking it before it finally died completely. I bought a FX3700m from Niffcreature to replace it. I was worried about heat, so I replaced the thermal pads on the memory with some copper shims and put ICD on the GPU and vRAM. The thing runs cooler than my 9800 did, and it's faster. Win win! It has stock 3700 vBIOS and runs stock 3700 drivers. No problems in games; I'm a happy camper.

These are the five flavors of MXM 2.1 cards. Your 9800M GT is MXM 2.1 Type III.

These are MXM 3.0 cards, and will not work in your machine.

Be careful, because a lot of people selling on ebay confuse MXM 2.1 type III with MXM 3.0. Many of the cards you're looking at come in both 2.1 and 3.0. Your best bet is to get a picture of the actual hardware they will be shipping to you and identify it yourself.
