Im playing Skyrim on my np8170...All settings are on high...Distance Obects are full and I have Anti Aliasing on 4x and Anisotropic filter on 12x...

I have the 580m but the temperatures are going up to 80-85C after playing for only 30 minutes. This is the only thing I hate about laptops is that the cards get really hot and games crash. The game runs 60fps with these settings.

I was wondering if anyone else who has the 580m what settings you have skyrim on. Please let me know. I feel like this card should run the game with everything ultra but it doesnt...

Leave the game settings the same and undervolt the GPU (maybe a slight underclock as well).

Or try using a notebook cooler ;)

skyrim is poorly optimized for the pc. go onto the bethesda forums and you will see so many people will high end rigs running the game poorly.

also notebook cooler is a must i think for a gaming laptop.

There's nothing wrong with 80-85C, that's normal for a high performance card like this. They're rated for up to 110C, though you should never see anything over 95C. Games shouldn't be crashing at that temperature because the card is operating normally. So feel free to run the game at whatever setting you like best, because there's nothing to worry about with the temps you posted :)

Mobile GPU's run much warmer than Desktop variants by design.

You should be able to run ultra with ease. When I disable x-fire on my laptop I get 35-60 fps with everything maxed. Try updating your drivers.

As for the temps, adjusting the graphics settings won't have a significant effect on the temps. I wouldn't get worried until you hit 95c+.

I agree. I am running the game at max with similar temperatures and no issues except for anotehr thread Im about to open which is unrelated. I also always use the cooling pad at max.

Cooling pad is a marketing gimmick in my opinion. Whether your GPU runs at 95c or 75c, it will function the same and will last longer than you will want your laptop to last.
As long as its max temp is below its throttling point, it will function perfectly.

I do understand that some poorly designed laptops do require an external cooling to get by but Clevo isn't one of them.

Lots of people (like me) only use them because of the way they're made to sit on your lap. It makes using the laptop on a bed or something a lot easier than just putting it on a book or straight onto your lap.

Mobile cards are equipped to handle much higher temps than those of desktops.

85C is completely normal for the 580M. Just put the game on ultra and stop worrying.

To drop my temps considerably I had to repaste with icd24.
Note that I'm using notepal u3 as well.
With clocks 740/1920 it tops 80c with skyrim @ ultra.

wow your 485m is a beast ! You get almost 580M clocks I can reach without overvolting...
Is it also possible to overvolt the 485m ? Why don't you try ? :)

I tried already but there's no difference, my limit is 750 on core.
I can do 2000 on memory but it artifacts, 1900 is stable :)
