I've been googling but not really sure how to put it in a google search.

My 1080i/720p HDTV is the same only thing the same in this setup. It has both HDMI and VGA ports.

Current setup(Vostro 1500): I have a laptop with VGA port only. VGA to VGA no problems. Picks up the native resolution 1360x768 @60Hz. Sometime I like to just watch a show or movie and close the laptop monitor. Laptop detects this when I close up the lid and my HDTV becomes the primary/only monitor until I reopen the laptop screen. Love it.

Enter the new laptop(Sager NP5797): No more VGA port only DVI and HDTV. The future I suppose. At first I think sweet, HDMI to HDMI; But it's stuck on stupid for 1280x720 or 1920x1080. That doesn't work. I even tried to force in a custom resolution of 1360x768 @60Hz. Grrr... So what about a DVI to VGA converter. Success! But no when I close the monitor, nothing changes. The close lid stays the primary. The system isn't auto detecting anything.

Can anybody give me a solution to get the TV to turn into the primary screen when I close the laptop? <shrug>

Ultimate solution would be just to get a new 1080p HDTV right. That'll be several months away if ever though.

My msi laptop does the same thing, it really depends on the gpu driver sometimes. If you update it to a whql certified driver that might fix it.

It is a problem with the latest whql driver from Nvidia.
186.61 does not have this problem, for me.

The Sager notebook will not auto-switch between the notebook display as primary and an external as primary. You would need to simply use the hotkeys to toggle to external-only in order to make the external the primary display.

Typically, we advise against leaving the notebook running with the lid closed, as this can cause heat to build up between the keyboard and LCD with no effective way to vent.
