I relatively recently did the grad suffering of installing Vista fresh from scratch, which was a tonne of effort of course. (XP32 -> Vista 64 is a full install, which was nice and clean but as a developer I've got a -tonne of tools and kits to install so it was quite a time sink.)
Interestingly .. XP to Vista the cpu temp went up about 7-10 degrees, with similar levels of tuning. (Aero costs a bit, but not a huge amount .. just Vista seems to run hot!)
Clevo M570RU (Sager NP5790 I think it is offhand)
Running Linux on the same machine (with some effort to get the wifi drivers sorted) and the temp runs a little cooler than XP did, which is nice.
Anyway, if I do a _upgrade_ from Vista 64 to Win7 64..
1) Will it work, for the Clevo? I'm not overly interested in doing another full install, I want to do the upgrade (even if it chugs for 6 hours.) Will wifi and random drivers (nvidea etc) still be there, or does Win7 upgrade install its own drivers?
2) Any idea how the temperatures run on the Sager, relative to XP or Vista? this is important to me, in the sense XP courted the fan thresholds, so the fans would turn up or down depending what I was doing (and Clevo fans are loud as we all know.. With Vista, the fans are always on, and with Linux the fans tend to off.
Just curious how your Vista->Win7 upgrades have gone, Saget specificly.

1) The fact of you computer being a Clevo has little bearing on weather you will have to do a full install or not ... It has more to do with your starting point, in your case Vista. Refer to this chart to see if a full install will be necessary.

2) I am running W7 on a Sager np8662 and my cpu temps range from 28-46 with a ambient temp of about 21'c -
Vista wasn't a bad install, but I had a lot of little oddities that required the Sager/Clevo drivers, or at least more recent drivers. It was relatively untypable for instance, due to needing the touchpad driver -- the built in driver was so sensitive that breathing near it would trigger a mouse-click (not quite that bad, but you'd be typing, and I think just the vibration from typing, or perhaps hair or something, would trigger a mouse click so the cursor would jum prandomly around an entry field, etc.)
I'm really rasther hoping than an upgrade will preserve exsisting drivers, and not rewuire me to go through several hours of suck
(ie: I'm running Vista 64 Ultimate, so upgrading to Win7 64 Ultimate is a sure thing, supposedly.)
As Clevo's are more rare than conventional machines, I just wonder if we're an edge case that gets into issues.
On my M570RU I used to run about 42 on XP with a bit of load thouh could drop to 39 .. fans kick on around 40-41, so I'd skirt on and off. Vista is a solid 46+ which is a big drag (and does impact battery life.)
Sort of hoping Win7 is cooler than Vista and back in the XP range. (Even with Aero off, its running hotter on the cpu, so perhaps worse idle management, or cpu state transitions or the like. Aero had nil impact, so its not ambient heat from the gpu bringing it up..)
Thanks for the rpely; I know its probably a moot post, but just wondered if Clevos exploded on upgrade

i'd get all the drivers for your machine on a usb stick before the install. I do this for every PC I own - just saves agro later on.
I installed win7 on the np8882 and only had problems with the sound drivers.
Vista -> win7, Sager compatibility?
